How much is a Reed 104R worth? It has 4" jaws and a fixed base. It appears un restored but the handle is not bent.

Thanks.

I don't have it for sale. It's a vise that I saw and ad for. He's asking $150. Thanks for the input. I'll wait another week or so and maybe make an offer.

I picked it up today for $70. I think I did OK but didn't steal it either. It will need new jaws eventually. I will post pics soon.

Reed makes good stout vises. I paid 40 for my 104r. The jaws on most reeds are not replaceable, as they are hot forged during the casting process. Some are smooth, some are knurled. Still a solid buy, as long as it was not abused to bad

Pics would help, but if its in-repaired and in good condition, I think you got a great vise for a good price.

Calculate that price out over the next several decades you'll be using that vise, maybe add on another hundred years your children and grandchildren will be using it and I think you'll see what an excellent value these old vises are when compared to import stuff you buy today which are basically disposable... and also hope they don't cost you any medical bills from injury.

Reeds are simply awesome, at or near the top of any quality vise list. Vises are a long term investment, really long term. The joy of quality far outlasts the joy of saving money.

The jaws on most reeds are not replaceable,

This deserves a second emphasis. Had two friends who learned to their sorrow:

1. A steal deal on a Wilton which needed both jaws and the buyer about had the big one when he got a quote of $90 for new jaws.

2. Another seemingly good deal on an Athol with buggered jaws, but then a closer examination showed the jaws aren't replaceable.

Due diligence would have saved them some heartburn. Sometimes there's a reason that vise is cheap. Also, examine them carefully for cracks and camouflaged welds.
