Ricky: I don't own a Reed 405, but I do own a 404.5 so if another member doesn't have a 405 measurement go ahead and PM me and i'll get you the 404.5 pin size that should be close.

if you have a REED 405 you should really post up a few pictures of it for us that like old vises.

good luck

Hi, Ricky,

A practical way to make up a replacement taper pin for a swivel jaw vise would be to cut/file that taper in a scrap of sheet metal, filing til the part will fit the taper with no 'rock'.

This, read with a protractor, gives you the angle from centre-line. Use this number to set your lathe compound, and turn that taper on a scrap of steel round stock, (common mild steel is perfectly adequate for this part) taking care to have a good smooth finish.

Try the turned taper in the vise jaw. If it doesn't 'rock' and marks full length, the taper is correct. If not, adjust your compound, and try again.....a small fraction of a degree will make quite a bit of difference in the taper fit.

Correct the angle as necessary, for an optimal fit in the taper bore, by polishing with 320, then 400, then 600 emery. 600 will bring up an adequately good finish.

Personally, I prefer to drill/tap the taper pin, once done, and fit a small forged eye-bolt, then do a light weld or braze to retain the eye, and blend for appearance. This forms a little ring at the top of the taper-pin, which allows the use of any drift or round stock to loosen the taper pin when needed.

cheers

Carla

Carla: as always I really enjoy reading your posts. any chance you might have a few pictures to post of a few pins you might have made? also did you put a chain on the pin to keep them with the vise like some have done?

Ricky: in case you didn't know Carla might be one of the best machinists on GJ.

let me know if you need my 404.5 pin dimensions, but I bet with Carla's post you might have a good idea now how to make a better sized one for your 405.

Kris: I really doubt anybody is going to email you for a picture. if you really do have that big reed might I suggest you post it up on the main vise thread and here's the link.

not sure which device you are trying to post pictures on Garage Journal with. care to say? I use the paperclip method just above where we write our posts to attach pics sort of like an email.

good luck or ask questions if you still can't load a picture.
