Refacing doors.....thoughts and suggestions?

Hey guys! New member, first post!

I am doing some remodeling to my house, and need to address the garage doors. They were previously covered over by plywood and painted. They look pretty boring, and the plywood is getting soft. I was hoping I could remove the plywood and refinish the doors, but after looking behind the plywood the original wood is getting pretty soft. It is good on the inside, so I had hope.

I priced cheap steel doors today, and it seems rather expensive (not to mention the two month wait time) for more cheap, rather boring looking doors.

What I am thinking of doing - replace the aging software with fresh plywood. Sand, use some type of pine or other molding to overlay onto the plywood to make a carriage house look/style door, or some other aesthetically pleasing pattern. Add hardware, and paint.

Has anyone done something similar? Any suggestions? Looking to save some money and have a great looking finished product (just had to scratch $6200 in checks to our loving IRS today which came out of my remodel funds).

Thanks in advance!

On a previous garage door project I striped it down to the frame and installed rough sawn ply, then framed the door with 1 x 6 pine trim. After painting it looked great.

Just make sure the original wood framework on door is good! There's a lot of work involved and that's just for the doors. Then there's track brackets and possibly flag brackets involved. Doors will be a different thickness, also the springs. The doors will weigh more. Plus the doors will need to be removed and laid flat to properly glue, screw and cut the new materials. It can be done as long as the frame is solid! Good luck, and let us know which way you decide to go. (Pics)

2 month wait for cheap 8'x7' steel doors???
Every big box store should have them in stock not to mention real door companies. I only had to wait a couple of days for 12'x8' commercial level doors.

Any pics? This is something similar to what I am aiming for here. Seems like I can do this myself for 200-300 bucks (guessing), or 2500 and up to just have the new doors in the same manner

Wow.. I am all for supporting small business but $2500??

I got a 16x7 fully insulated top of the line door. Around $600 for the door plus I paid a few hundred to get it installed and the opener put in. Granted this was a few years ago. But $2500 seems high..

But $6200 to the irs is worse. :(

Btw save up and when you can afford it pop for the insulated door if you are in a cold climate. Worth the money.

I paid $1400 for two 9x8 torsion spring doors and tracks, installed everything solo myself.
Took about 14 days to get the doors made/delivered.
Overkill for you though as these are Cat 5 hurricane doors.

I would get more quotes.
