how many of you guys ever visit the library and check out books for some of the info you are looking for??

I see a lot of questions on sizing wire for this or that.... and questions on the size or spacing of the footings or concrete, etc....

They have a lot of great books at the library--it's free, and it's from the experts, and it's documented. In planning my garage, I consider myself to know a little bit about a lot of things. however, sometimes it's helpful to know a bit more on certain subjects. That's when I checked out books from the library. Many of the books printed by "Fine Homebuilding" are great! Some of the black and decker productions are OK, but more basic. I found the series "Code Check" books are especially helpful. A lot of quick diagrams and references to the Residential building code and the NEC....

Just an idea before getting suspect info from the internet.......

Of course, you can argue that not all of the info in the books is perfect either, but you can't beat the quantity and quality of the info--especially the diagrams and pictures....

My step-mother works at the Penn State univ library. I have her check books out for me from time to time. I got 2 or 3 books on radiant heating when I was working on the concrete floor.

Usually I can find what I need on line. But I have taken out a few books from our local branch. The ladies over there fall all over you trying to be so helpful. The best part is you can search on line for your book and have it sent to your branch for free in most cases. A robot 'phones, and keeps 'phoning until you answer, just to let you know your book is ready to go. Gotta love that library, the last place you get REAL service (from your taxes)

It's a place where they have computers with free internet access in case yours isn't working :)

Seriously, the nearest, even modestly large, library is over 50mi from my house. So popping over to check out / return books is not very convenient. OTOH one of the best things about out very small local library is that it provides me with access to an online library, with scanned copies of hard to find books/references, that I can checkout and read online from my own computer without leaving the house.

I get books at various places and use them to get most info. But if/when I hit a snag or somthing the book(s) dont cover, its Q&A time on the internet.

This applies to just about everything.

I usually use the internet to build a little bit of a baseline on a subject, followed by borrowing from our exceptional library system (seriously, the system near me is really a good one.. and the people there are nice too) and talking to experts face to face. I just find that the internet is a good way to really quickly build some terminology and ideas so that all the other research can be more effective.

Last time I went to the Library I needed to get a diagram on how to wire a 3 way circuit in the house my daughter bought and was renovating to flip. 1st thing I did was hit their internet access to get the info. There I was in a LIBRARY and it never even crossed my mind to look in an electrical book! :lol_hitti

How did we even get thru 1 single day before the internet?????
