Refinishing deck question

I've started down the path of stripping and refinishing my deck.

The previous owners did a hack job staining it before they sold it to try and make it look nice. In their effort they managed to get stain all over the metal balusters.

Im looking for suggestions on removing the stain from the balusters without ruining the finish on them. Any ideas?

If it picks off with your fingernail use a scotchbrite pad. If not try a 3m stripping disc on low speed. Might be easier to remove the ones that are an issue so you don’t tear up the wood and stain

They need to come off to re-stain the deck so just repaint them while you have them off. Anything else is going to lead to a repaint anyway.

They all have it and there is hundreds.

Wasn't planning on painting them due to the number of them and figured and kind of spray paint wouldn't hold up like whatever the factory finish is.

I priced out replacing them and it's $1300+ so that's not a option

I would try to match the new stain to the old and work around them. There's no way I would have the time to remove, clean/prep and paint all of those, unless I took a week off work just for that - not gonna happen.

Working around those would take more time than just removing all of them and staining all the wood. It would be easy to clean and spray paint spindles. Hang a dozen spindles or more from 1x2 wood with wire coat hangers pieces placed through the spindle screw holes.

My concerns with spray painting the spindles is just that. spray paint

i dont want something thats going to fail and start flaking/peeling off in a year and look worse than it does now.

A good quality spray paint will last surprisingly well John Deere sells implement paint in black. They have it in gallons, quarts and rattle cans I've had excellent results with it

If you want to spray paint the spindles you can buy a cheap $10 Harbor Freight HVLP gun (Purple one) and get a pint of Rust-Oleum oil based paint, dilute it with mineral spirits and shoot them. Extremely strong and prevents rust too.
