bought these 2 tables from a local rental guy for $100.. I want to stain them with some cabot's oil semi solid. The wood is NOT pressure treated. Just regular pine. Would it be OK to pressure wash them first with wide fan spray? Was planning on sanding after then staining. One is in better shape than the other.

I'd only pressure wash them if they had gooey sticky matter on them. If that was the case I'd pick a real hot day so they dry fast but I'd prefer to just take them apart and sand them down to nice wood and refinish.

Deception: however you like to strip or clean is your choice cause all mentioned sounded ok. as you know don't use the Zero or small tip on the pressure washer cause you could maybe shoot a hole straight through the wood.

another option to stain if you have some warm weather is to put on BLO (boiled linseed oil) that give it a nice look. it doesn't dry quick so a good hot week or two is maybe needed before using the picnic tables.

also make sure you don't throw stained or BLO rags in the garbage or lay near anything burnable cause THEY CAN SELF COMBUST and many a garage or home has burnt down cause of this.

good luck

You should be able to pressure wash and sand, it is what I did on a couple of cedar built outdoor ornament/furniture projects. I finished with Thompsons Water Seal, although this is not any sort of recommendation, it is what I had previously used and I still had some lying around and wished to use up.

Thanks for the advice guys.. i ended up sanding the tops, pressure washing everythin on wide fan, then sanding the tops again with 100 grit orbital sander. Used cabots semi black solid oil stain on the legs, and Cabot Australian timber oil honey teak on the table & seats. Think it turned out pretty nice.

Only problem is that I put on an extra coat after these pics and it took forever to dry, I think i used too much. The lady at Cabots said i can give it a wipe with mineral spirits on any dark/cloudy areas. If not a light sanding with 220 grit.

DEC: let us know if your table's stain dried or if you had to wipe or sand it. looks 100% better so nice work and I bet it will be a great place to hang this and coming summers.

WELL DONE!!

also just an FYI is that I use BLO (boiled linseed oil) on most of my old vintage cast iron and metal pieces too to give them a bit of a shine, but more for rust protection. there are other products you can use, but BLO has been used for years and still gets recommended by me and others that use it. I should buy stock in a company that makes it cause it works.

Deception, that table looks great. I really like the combo of the black legs and lighter top/seats. Very nice looking. Now start using it! :)

I called Cabot & they said to wet a rag with mineral spirits and give a wipe, i only did it on one of the benches just in case it messed things up. That part definitely dried a little smoother. But after having the table in my shed for a week (was raining heavily) I brought it outside to dry more in the sun. Its definitely dry now, water beads up & you can wipe it off .. but you can still feel a slight tackiness to it when hot in the sun. It might always be like that since I over applied. No fault of the product.

Had some family over my house with kids this weekend & we ate at the table, even changed a diaper or 2 lol. Finish held up just fine. I think when i do the 2nd table ill only do 1-2 coats of the timber oil, and do it in the garage so the sun doesnt dry it too fast. Maybe ill sand sown this table top and benches next year and do the same.
