refrigerant sniffer too sensitive?

At work we have an a/c sniffer (sorry, don't know the brand) anyways, it's just about worthless for finding a/c leaks. it has 2 settings, low and high (sensitivity). When it is on high, it will give a false positive anytime! I can have it outside, away from any car or refrigerant, and it will start beeping like it found the mother lode!:shocking:

When on low, it will still give a false positive, but really only catches an a/c leak if it's pretty severe, and by then I can see/hear it as well.
this is my only experience with these testers, is this just normal for sensitive testers, is it junk? I've heard that the tips wear out and need replaced, Is this a symptom of that?

I'm fed up with it and with the busy a/c season coming up (its here) it'd be nice to have some working tools for finding common a/c leaks. The uv dye isn't always foolproof. there are places in an engine compartment that you can't shine any light on, etc.

could be a worn sensor. could be a pos unit.
i have several detectors that when on 'small', go off, and recheck with another unit, to keep from going on a wild goose chase. (they are moth balled)
my 'go to' sniffers are h-10 and h-10p. i dont waste my time with other units

I've been through that. We have a fluorescent dye tool now and its great. No false readings anymore.

I work in maintenance at a hospital and we use the dye tool and the H10 Pro. Actually we have a few H10's, new and old, that the older guys swear by. You're going to pay for it, but it works every time. The corded model is cheaper than the cordless. https://www.mybacharach.com/product-view/h-10-pro/

There is a forum called Hvac-talk and the H10 is recommended 9 out of 10 times. Not to mention it's been mentioned twice now on this thread. I think you got your answer... http://hvac-talk.com/vbb/showthread.php?187468-What-is-the-Best-Refrigerant-Leak-Detector/page2&
