Hi everyone,

I remember how my parents used to use their upright freezer for storage of paper plates, paper towels, etc (while off of course). I also noticed that used upright freezers and upright refrigerators are very inexpensive as compared to storage cabinets. Has anyone thought/done storage cabinets out of old/salvaged fridges or upright freezers?

Thanks. This board rocks.

I've never done it. It's a good idea but would result in a lot of wasted space.

I'd use kitchen cabinets instead. Keep and eye on Craigslist for used kitchen cabinetes. You can get them for really cheap or free.

I used to have an fridge out behind my old garage. I had limited space and I used it for storing paint, lubricants, cleaners, etc. I had a hasp and a padlock on it and I rigged it so the light was on during the winter months so that the things inside wouldn't freeze. I have more space now and a metal cabinet to store the same type of things in but a fridge can make a good storage cabinet for indoors too. For one thing it would protect the contents from sparks from welding and grinding.

I've stored beer in my fridge for decades. Works great.

A working one also provides good storage for keeping welding rod dry.

It would keep the roaches out, ( palmento bugs) they like the get into paper in Fla. Out side the scrapers might steal in to sell. They are bold here.

I know a bloke that uses a gutted old fridge as a gun safe, painted up like new with a medical waste sticker on the front and pickup dates for the "medical waste"

Makes people think twice about breaking into it!

My Grandpa in Tennessee used one (during the '70's). I remember that it was old (locking handle), rusted to hell and looked just horrible. If that is what you have, go for it.

Personally, I would rather use butter bowls on a shelf instead if those were my only options.

Seems like a lot of wasted space to me too but if you do it, put a hasp and padlock on it or DON'T do it. You don't want to be responsible for the tragedy of a child getting in it.
