Refurbing an old lathe for my grandfather and it needs some wiring done to it... the current setup has what looks like a lamp cord half wired to it! scary... He brought over a Dayton 1HP (#6K148G) motor to put on it, its not new but it doesn't look to be used at all, very clean. I know a little about wiring but not an engineer so looking for help wiring this in.

It will be on 115 and the name plate shows
P1 - Line
P2, T8, T3 - Tape
T2, T5, T4 - Line

for CW operation... It had wires hanging off it from and the white Neutral was tied into one wire( I'm assuming the P1) and the Black Power wire was tied into 3 wires(assuming T2, T5, T4) and the others were tied together (assuming P2, T8, T3)

All the info I've searched on how to wire this thing references the denoted lines AND what color they are, but this one has all the lines black but thankfully are labeled alphanumerically... so am I right as P1 neutral, P2, T8, and T3 tied off together, and T2, T5, T4 tied into hot line?

Sounds right, although I'd feel better with a pic of the tag. A 1 HP motor is way overkill for any Craftsman lathe I can think of, most used a 1/2 HP or even as little as 1/4 HP if it was a 6" swing.

I'll try to throw up a pic, I did take one...

It is a Logan lathe actually, made for sears/ward back in the mid 50s. 9" I believe.

Atlas made lathes for Sears, while Logan made lathes for Wards.
Atlas lathes have flat ways, and are not as desireable as Logan lathes.

Heres the plate for the Dayton motor

I'll grab a few of the lathe tonight.

Also he was going to wire it up straight to the power cord... Which I said no, that aint right and is dangerous... the lathe has a built in on/off switch. Do I wire that just the same as I would wire a light fixture and switch using the switch loop method?

Yep... that all worked out like I figured. Got it all rewired and cleaned up a bit this weekend... I'll put up a few pics later this afternoon. Thanks for the help

Heres some pics... As far as I can tell it's a "Powr Kraft" unit made by Logan for Wards, 9" I believe. Besides the motor, cords, and switch everything seems to be original and IIRC the info dated it to 1953.

Heres a shot with the new motor on... (the pulley is not all the way on, was just testing for fit)
