Ordered a 56" top chest from HFT. It arrived damaged and I refused to take delivery.

Never had damaged freight before, what happens now?

Called HFT, they will ship a replacement upon return.

Getting the bottom chest delivered next week, hopefully it goes smoother.

When it rains it pours, package with a vintage wrench went missing.

I need to stick with getting stuff locally.

How bad was it damaged? They will probably dump at a decent discount.

.

Not in my experience.

I bought the 16-drawer for like $289 with a coupon, got it home and unpacked and the bottom was smashed pretty good. Brought it back to get another one and asked how much they would want for it, they said they'll sell it for $279 all day long.

I've seen a few more scratch and dents at HF with some fairly significant damage, for the same price as the lowest coupon or slightly less. And they do move them!

It was functional but beat up. Dents on the side that I saw and lots of scratches and gouges. The cardboard that slips over the top was the only part of the original packaging on it, the small pallet and straps were gone.

When I bought my 56" from HF and unpacked it at home, the outer chrome trim was dented on both sides and the plastic drawer locks were all broken. Took it back and opened the next two that they had in stock and they all had the same damage. Ended up getting it for a discount and getting the replacement parts from HF for free.

Got a refund after I asked for a replacement, problem is that they didn't refund shipping.

E-Mailed HFT support today, bottom box is overflowing and I need more space.

I've noticed that a lot of the cheaper tool companies don't do a very good job of packaging so a lot of stuff gets damaged. I don't know where in NH you are but there is a HF store in Londonderry or Salem. I don't recall which. But one option is to have it shipped to the store and pick it up there. I know it is a pain but at least it's in their hands before you get it.

The problem I had with that option is the store in Fargo, ND told me that they will not ship to store on a customer order..... Only stock orders get shipped to the store....

Called and they waived shipping charges on the replacement order.

I can't blame HFT for the damage, the top chest was on a different pallet than I saw them packed on at the store and the only original packaging was the cardboard box that slips over it. The driver seemed like he knew something was up and indicated that I should inspect it, he took pics and did paperwork while here.

Hopefully the second box arrives in good shape. Just waiting for an order confirmation now.

How come you didn't just buy one from the store if you saw them there? The "shipping crate" and I use that term loosely, for my 44" HF box was made out of some kind of balsa wood I think. It just crumbled in my hand. I have no idea how they make it here at all from China.

Good thing you refused the shipment. Standard procedure now is 5 days to file concealed damage claims. A lot of folks won't inspect at the time of delivery.

At my company, we file a damage claim with carrier (after requesting pictures from customer) and send out a replacement ASAP. We then hash it out with the carrier while keeping the customer happy.

OK, now I am a bit confused. You paid the shipping for shipping for the first box, but it was damaged so you didn't accept it. Now they want you to pay to ship the replacement box? If that is the case, it sounds screwed up to me. You already paid for shipping the box, it isn't your fault the box arrived damaged.

He posted the details after you stopped reading.... They followed through with charging him for shipping of the first box, but waved the shipping on the replacement.

Don't own a truck, store has the 56" in stock infrequently so borrowing a friends at the drop of a hat when they do isn't really a good option. Renting a truck costs about the same as delivery and its dropped off right in my driveway.

HFT has great customer support, really pleased with how they handled things with this issue and the few minor things that have popped up over the years.

Harbor Freight came though, got my top box in. Some of the soft aluminum trim got clobbered somehow, box wasn't damaged. Hopefully replacements are available, took some pics and sent them an e-mail.

When I picked mine up at the store, I got home and noticed that some of the clear labels and covers were missing. One call took care of it. I did open and inspect at the store before loading them up. Heard about too many horror stories of bad shipping damage.

I need to stick with getting stuff locally.

I kinda stick local, as well, when it comes to big and bulky stuff -- partly out of wanting to buy local from local stores and also paranoia about having stuff dropped and abused by delivery people.

But with all this "just in time" inventory stuff, I am not too sure how the local stores get their new stock in. If it's a huge store, they probably get a dedicated truck from a regional warehouse. Smaller stores maybe receive their stock via the same delivery co's that individual buyers use?

I am thinking of ordering something similar.... when you refuse the shipment... was the item in a box with obvious damages and the content inside damaged ? or did you open the box and check the item before signing off ?
I was actually looking at the compressor they have or maybe the 44" tool box.

It was on the truck, only the cardboard sleeve was left of the original packaging. Lifted one corner and it had a bunch of dents.
