Regulator on Dewalt air compressor

I recently purchased a Dewalt pancake air compressor (DWFP55126). It came in a kit with their brad nailer.

I was playing with it tonight and noticed something odd with the regulated pressure. I set it to 95 psi and popped one nail with the brad nailer and the regulated pressure dropped down to about 65 psi. I popped a few more and it held at 65 psi. The tank pressure was fairly steady at 150 psi.

Why the big drop after just popping one nail and why didn't it recover to get back to 95psi? I realize there is probably a psi range for recovery so it isn't running 100% of the time, but 30 psi is a pretty big drop.

Seems like I would have to set the regulator twice, an initial setting of 95 psi, pop a nail, and then set it again for 95 psi.

Is this normal or am I missing something?

Air tool pressure ratings are for working pressures. What to do is set your regulator higher so that when you pull the trigger the pressure drops to around 95psi (Or whatever the working pressure is).

You would also probably see less of a drop with a larger compressor and bigger air tank.

Normal, whatever you did with the regulator, the air in the line is at whatever pressure you started at till you do something that lets a bit out.
