If my compressor is rated at 175psi, do I have to run a 175psi regulator? Could I run one rated lower...most common ones are around 145psi. I have a Porter Cable 80 gallon. Thanks.

Unless you like the thought of regulators coming apart under pressure unannounced, and usually while you're there adjusting the thing, no.

Not as dangerous as putting an argon regulator on an O2 tank, but any time you overpressure something beyond it's rated capacity, you are rolling loaded dice with your **** as the bet. Is your **** worth saving a few dozen bucks by not using the right regulator?

Most regulators will have a maximum input pressure, which is different from output pressure or adjustment range.

Check what the maximum input it.

It depends on where you have your cut-off pressure set. Just because the compressor is rated at 175 doesn't mean you have to have the cut-off that high. I have mine set at 150 so the lower rated regulator would work for me.
