Greetings from NW Chicagoland

Hello!

I am the proud new owner of a 20x26 box with a big door on it, and right next door on the same lot is my wifes beautiful house! We are young and in our early 20s and just starting out our adventures of life. Our 2 year old son and 5 year old Pit mix puppy are joining us. I found garage journal a few years ago while on the Duramax Forums. Someone there had posted a picture of a garage and it sparked my interest and desire to one day have my own! So after many many months of searching we finally found a house that surprisingly had almost everything on our wishlist! One of them being [at least] a 2 car garage. Now it may not be much but its all mine.

A little background;

I am a culinary professional, one of my favorite things to do of course is slow smoke meats! I really like old school trucks, and anything diesel. I'm excited to have a garage to transform from a concrete slab and some studs to a super awesome garage full of tools and cool stuff. So here I am to share a portion of my journey in building and learning and having tons of fun!

Cheers!

-Adam

First post disappeared, so here we go again.

My name is Adam, my wife and I just bought our very first home in the NW chicago burbs. Real nice 4bed 2bath house with a full finished basement on a little over a 3rd of an acre. Best part is the 2car extra deep detached garage that I get to call home.

My Garage is a 20x26. When we moved in it was an empty shell. Over the years I intended to fill it with tools and projects and all that fun stuff. Some of my projects I look forward to are:

Furniture for the house:
Bookshelves and tv Console
huge farmhouse style kitchen table.
bedroom set

I plan to one day build my own chopper, restore a 1970s C10, build a rock crawler, and maybe even restore some classic American Muscle

I also want to build a forge and mess around with blacksmithing. Mostly so I can twist and shape metal and make my own hooks and drawer pulls for my furniture. These days I feel like handmade family heirlooms dont exist and I would love to pass things down through future generations.

As of now we have a 2 year old son who absolutely loves working in the garage with me, and I cant wait for him to grow up learning how to work on machines and build things with his hands.

I enjoy all of the knowledge and resources here and look forward to learning and contributing as much as I can.

Thank you,
Adam

Adam: welcome to the forum (again) and i know you'll like it here if you want to learn almost anything.

also since i'm 60 and have learned a lot about Safety in the garage from many of the members i'd suggest reading the Saftety 101 thread and even if you already are very careful you might learn a few more things that will really help you and especially your 2 year old son who sounds amazing.

here's the link and feel free to post up some of your tips or if you have time to read maybe post something saying what you learned that you didn't know before you read it.

Drivesitfar: That is such a great thread and the time and effort put into helping educate people on safety is incredible and I commend you and your efforts and those who have contributed! It was an enjoyable read with a few good laughs and I did learn a thing or two. so thank you for that!

Additionally, thank you for the warm welcome! I really enjoy the forums here and what they have to offer, however I feel it will only fuel my desire to acquire tools and build more stuff!

Cheers

Welcome to the GJ. I can see why your posts got deleted and dealt with as spam posts.

The forum has been inundated with spam and one of your posts did not help you. I have followed up your other topic http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=343769 and made sure it is still there for you. Apologies you got mixed up with another spam post some how. Although the post you made > asdfasdfasdfasdfasfd would not help you.

Adam: might be one of the best posts i've read in a while and as you can see i like this place. i try my best to help when i can and i also learn as much as i can because when i quit wanting to learn i guess i'll be dead.

also happy to hear you might have learned a few things in the safety 101 thread.

ask questions if you have any on threads talking about things you are wanting to know more about if you can't find the answer and if you have a quick question feel free to PM me and i'll try to help if i can.

here's a funny story you might like. i met a guy yesterday that wanted to buy some Honda parts from me that i still had from a car i sold and we got to talking about safety. he (40 year old owner of a motorcyle shop/store) said he uses ear protection all the time and my grand dad who has passed and my dad lost their hearing by not using any. of course i waited to long to learn how to use some and still don't all the time so my hearing is almost gone. that said i mentioned that if he was staining some wood did he know a rag could ignite if you don't air it out or throw it in a metal can with no air. he was surprised and told me his dad always said he had a rag just start on fire and he never believed him. it's going to be a fun Thanksgiving for that family when the 40 year old tells his dad why it caught on fire and also that now he believes that story.

lots to learn here and hope you get a chance to learn more about a few of the great members. post up a few pictures of cool stuff you own or just a few pictures of great stuff you like so you'll know how to post a few pictures and also so we can learn a bit more about you of course when you have the time to.

cheers
