Didn’t want to veer that topic off but did any of those older books discuss keeping tools rust free? Curious as metal quality has somewhat changed. Not wanting this to be what someone does for their tools just maybe a history discussion from days gone by.

All of the wartime TM's I have include hand tool care and maintenance sections, and I'm pretty sure they include cleaning and rust prevention tips, mainly for safety reasons. Right before the warnings about never using a screwdriver as a chisel or a monkey wrench as a hammer or a cheater pipe on a ratchet. :) I'll dig up some excerpts later.

Merci,
Here are some excerpts for you from a 1945 TM 9-857 Maintenance and Care of Hand Tools. Common theme is scouring with crocus cloth or aluminum oxide abrasive cloth and lubricating oil.

Several sections do that. The implication is longer term storage. Or at least not a daily user. I use Fluid Film, for instance, on tools put away in the Lugzsonian. If I have to get them out to answer a later question, elaborate on a topic, etc, I have to wipe them down before handling. I think it's the same notion.
