Also in SC. Presently(11 AM) 34 degrees and snowing. Yesterday I worked outside just at the shop entrance changing a rear tractor tire which had ice in it which cut the tube. Removed wheel with assistance, loaded it with a boom pole and chain, and took it to a tire store. The tire guy was lucky, the fire broke loose with one hit from the hammer. Got new tube installed, took wheel home, got it installed on the tractor, by myself, and got all done before dark including putting both tractors under shelter and putting tools up. Weather was warm enough to work in, unlike today. Temps going down to 20s tonight with black ice forecast. I feel for people in the cold climates.

-2f outside this morning, but still warm enough in the attached, insulated, but not heated (other that what radiates from the house) garage to melt the snow and ice off the truck overnight.
Truck thermometer showed 42f in the garage.
Shopvac'd about 5 to 10 gallons of water up before leaving this morning.
Probably have to do it again tomorrow. and the next day...and the next...

Has anyone ever done a heated toolbox to deal with tools stealing warmth from your hands? Either a small electric heater to bring the box up to 110 degrees or a heated mat from a terrarium to put on top for tools to warm on. Brainstorm at 4 degrees F when working the other night

Insulation and heat here with up to 6 months of winter have no choice. It was -40 here a few weeks ago and I had no problems working in the garage. It's the 10 foot walk from the house to the garage that ***** in that weather.

You must be down state a ways. It's 26 here in Tigerville, about 7 miles from the NC border. Gonna be a mess tonight.

Never thought of that one but I like the idea. I don't do much wrenching in bad weather but for those who do it isn't a bad idea... the heat mat sounds like a good approach although a HF heat gun on low would be a pretty cheap solution as well.

This is why I like our attached garage/shop, it never gets below 45 degrees, even last winter when it was -12. Only takes a few minutes for the heater to get it to work temps. The detached seems colder inside than out.

For the last week our outside temps have been above freezing even at night. This morning when I started my truck to go to work the temp was 54 degrees inside the garage.

Last night I was considering doing something out in the garage. I unlocked the door, opened it and got hit with the arctic blast and nope'd out of there. Even with my electric heater out there going 24/7 it's still below freezing out there now. My garage door really *****.

I do not remember. Been pretty cold in MD for the last month. Don't feel like spending anytime in the shop. I put in a radiant gas heater in the garage last spring but its not hooked up yet!. Kept putting it off until it was too late. Trying to get my new shop built but the weather hasn't helped with that either. Supposed to warm up in the next few and hopefully my trusses will be ready to start to get things finished.

Was in the garage a lot this weekend. On Sunday it was in the teens all day - and a nice 64 degrees thanks to the mini split. Best. Investment. Ever.

Just south of Greenville SC off I85. Sitting in the garage right now and it is 60 degrees. Walls and ceiling insulated garage doors are not. Running a 45,000 btu propane heater on low.

I’m in the dfw region of Texas and worked on my 3 wheeler out there today. Upper 20s felt nice compared to the recent single digit temps. Supposed to be in the 60s all weekend.

Hadn't been out to the shop for the past couple of days. Single digit lows and highs in the 20's. 35'x30' little insulation, drafty windows. Fired up the 220 electric heater and put a fire in the wood stove. Moved the morning projects near the stove. Put the oil pan on an engine, put new seals in the transaxle, then married the engine to the trans-axle.

After a couple of hours we moved the power pack over to the car and lifted them in. A little over 50 degrees inside after a couple of hours. Don't bank the fire or run the electric heater when I am not there. Supposed to be warmer this weekend.

I changed oil in the car Sunday evening. I put the car in the garage and cranked up the heat to 70 degrees. After I changed the oil I left the car in the garage because it had started to snow, but I turned the heat back down to 50 degrees. I just took the car out of the garage this afternoon because I had to go pay some bills. I actually enjoy working in my garage because with the natural gas heater it is comfortable doing it.

I always have stuff to do in my garage no matter the temps. It can be -35c outside i use a propane heater for an hour before and that will get it to +10c inside then i do my stuff haha. The 45k modine is going in next week so no more propane headaches or long warm up times. $1400 all installed im fine with that!!

For you guys who say you run electric heaters 24/7 yikes that power bill must hurt a bit in winter.

Even though it has been downright cold in Maine this winter, I have been spending some good quality time in the shop. It cost real money to build a well insulated heated shop, but I enjoy being out there a lot in the winter.

Normally my heater on low keeps my shop comfortable. It has been so cold lately the even on high I will not see a noticeable increase in temperature. If it doesn't change soon Ill break down and by another one.

I have multiple ones but if I fire them up they burn the oxygen out of the air pretty quick. The electric ones I have can't begin to make a difference when this cold.

It took me awhile of trial and error to find ones that work well without killing me quickly. I use a big buddy heater. I should add my perfect tenperature is like 50-55 degrees so I don't need it super warm to be happy.

What I would give for a closing door and cement. Right now I am working in a carport, 3 sides are closed, but no door and my project car 72 Dodge Dart sticks out about 4 feet. Floor is soft asphalt. I've been thinking about a space heater and some plastic sheeting to keep some heat in. Rubber lock together mats make the floor bearable to lay on, but man that steel gets cold quick.

Central IL here. Managed an ignition coil, plugs and wires in the ranger with temps in teens. Garage uninsulated, ****++y leaky Masonite siding no sheathing, no ceiling, one broken window, and three uninsulated steel garage doors ☺️. Definitely no heating this thing yet! But I agree with others about the simple shelter from the wind makes a big difference. I am a mail carrier and walk in the cold all day so I am used to it, mostly.
I also removed the mower deck from the big husky and have been using it to plow the drive. It gets it's own garage bay as we very rarely park the cars in garage as it's so far from house.

The story I heard I that we are being punished for Trump pulling out of the Paris thing.
It seems backward though.
Shouldn't we be suffering from global warming?

They may be a little underpowered for the wild temperature swings we get sometimes here. When your garage is colder than outside, the warm and moist air comes in and hits your cold tools and you know the rest.

I haven't done anything in my garage since it got cold just before the new year started. :(

We've had several 0*F and below here in southeastern Ohio since Christmas, but I keep the garage at 50*F when I'm not in there and 70*F when I am. It's worth it for the enjoyment I get out of being there, because I'd probably be spending a lot more money than the cost of Nat. gas and electric out doing something else.

Today was crazy, high 60's and sunny but super windy. I think my thermometer might have even reached 70... But now it's raining and tomorrow the wind changes and we are dropping back down to 27... :(

last weekend or maybe the weekend before, I went downstairs to get some things done. built a fire, tried to do some organizing and whatnot. Got a half hour worth of work done in 8 hrs spent so much time just standing in front of the fireplace.

Today I was outside in a tshirt. Still accomplished much less than I should have.

Like today, or any day. With full insulation, drywall, plus it's own zone on the boiler, it stays a cool 55 when unoccupied. If I want it warmer, I just turn up the thermostat. Or, if I'm going to be stationary, then I have a little quartz heater that's cheaper to run.
