RemLine toolbox age?

Hello! Pretty new to this forum, as my recent search for information on a toolbox I will soon be inheriting lead me here. But my copious searching is leaving me very overwhelmed and I'm not finding what I'm looking for. So I ask, can anyone give me ANY information about this tool chest? Age? Place of Manufacture? Knowing my grandpa it is probably US made(If he could get US made of anything he would, North America being the next alternative), but more specific place would be cool.

That pic was tiny, I could hardly see it. Rem line was a decent box from back in the day, they went downhill in the late '90's. I'm not sure of the logo date, but baed on other Rem lines I have seen here, I'm going to guess late '60's to early 70's. The box is USA, I think they were made in Chicago, but not 100%

Yeah, they're HUGE on my end too. Maybe bobcatdan has a really small computer screen.

The top chest is a model 1100. The roller cabinet is either a 900A or 900B, depending on what wheels it has.

Definitely USA made. The 1965 RemLine catalog I looked at to get the model numbers shows a different nameplate style--more modern looking to me than yours, so they could be older. Or they could be newer. Just guessing.

Nice unit, whatever the exact age. And that it belonged to your grandfather makes it even nicer.

i called and tryed to find out about what # and year mine was and was told they (the co. now) did not have any way of telling me. "she" said that the new co. did not have pic. of the old style or any info. on the boxes being made before they got the remline name ??? i've got a lower box like the one shown with accorn nuts on the handles - what about the wheels?? i got the box back in 80 from an auto parts store in elm city, NC. was just trying to find out a few thing about it when i re-did it. it was my frist lower box to start, put my c-man on top to have the "pro-fesh-n-al" tool box set. alway wanted to know how to spell mechanic - and now i are one !!! kind of thing.

There ought to be a historical reference for Remline tool boxes. They made so many, and were sold under so many brands that they probably outnumber Craftsman 2 to 1.

My Remline box is labeled "PowrKraft" - a Montgomery Wards store brand that was likely sold in the late 1960's or early 1970's:

there really does need to be a historical reference.... All I know is that it was probably bought in/after 1970, and all the responses seem to coinside with this. But the complete and utter lack of information, especially historical, on these boxes is really weird and annoying.

Maybe they do outnumber Craftsman, but I hardly ever see them, and I've yet to find one to buy. Maybe it's a regional thing.

My Remline box is labeled "PowrKraft" - a Montgomery Wards store brand that was likely sold in the late 1960's or early 1970's:

They offered two styles of wheels: angled swivel casters, like you'd find on old-style creepers; and composition rubber wheels (2 fixed, 2 swivel with locks).

It has ghosted lettering from "Wigglesworth Volvo", which was a north-side Chicago dealership open in the 60s. There is a serial number on the nameplate that starts with "59". I'm going to guess that's when mine was built.
Yours, I also notice, lacks the little man stamped into the handles, which I've seen on most other Remline boxes.
Assuming mine (and most others I've seen) is earlier, the style of badge (font and construction) and your statement about being bought in or after 1970 makes me think it's early 70s.

(I also emailed the current company, who said they knew nothing, too...)

I would love to find a top box like the ones posted above. I've been watching at auctions for a while now with no luck. Flatintoone, if you ever want to sell yours I am in WI.... I have a bottom that was given to me by an old neighbor that is stamped H 3362. I was assuming it was a 1962 model?

Took these of my grandfathers box. There's a c man I too but the bottom is remline. I'm hoping to fix this up one day.

By the way this box was in a flood this spring. You can see coal in the bottom box. There was more than two feet of water in the garage.

Remline dated their boxes. Look on the back side of the emblem and there will be a 2 digit number stamped inside the box on the metal. That is the year it was made.

Wow- that is amazing! Thanks for the info. I've liked RemLines for a long time but never knew that they had dates on them. This revelation even prompted me to make my first post in about a year!

So based on my boxes, that means that the emblem with the rounded left side is slightly older than the rectangular one (as I suspected). I imagine that the op's box is older than both of those styles.

Hi Everyone.
I have a set of remline tool boxes and like so many others am trying to find out how old they are. I checked on the inside of the drawer behind the emblem. Well there is nothing. One thing I did notice that no one has mentioned is on all of the handles there is a little man. The logo on both match the one in mailmixers photo.

The top box has a model of AAT10565 and the bottom one is an AAT9168.

Also if I were going to refinish these, Does anyone have specific suggestion on the paint and colors?

That restoration is badass. You did that right, thank you for posting. Is that rattle can or sprayed on?
Always on the lookout for a Rem Line here in So Cal, in particular one with the Rem Line man on the emblem. I've seen a few, but they're thrashed and the emblems are faded out.

Rustoleum rattle can, stripped to bare steel washed with mineral spirits then primed, painted and clear coated. Removed every last piece of hardware including the tags. My wife coated the tags with a thin layer of two part epoxy to protect them.
