Remodeling House, Adding New 200A Panel

I just had a question on the best approach to adding a new electrical panel to my house. My wife and I plan to remodel the place over the next 5 years. Right now it has a 100A Pushmatic panel in the old attached garage which the previous owner converted to a living room. I would like to move the panel to the basement, directly beneath the old panel, and over about 10 feet.

I am trying to figure out the best way to do this without having to have a bunch of junction boxes where I connect the old wires to the new, and without having to take 3 days off of work to rewire my house and rip down interior walls to gain access to the wiring. My thought was this:

Install the new panel where I want it, and then use it as a "Sub Panel" for now. So I would run a 50A breaker from the old panel, with wire to the new panel. As we remodel our house, I can rewire it with all new wiring and run it to the new panel in its proper location. Once I get to the point where most of my circuits are located in the new panel, then I have the power company disconnect power to my house, and I then reroute the main power from the old panel to the new panel. This way I do not have to move a bunch of circuits all at once, and I can add them over time gradually.

Any thoughts?
