Nothing worth taking a picture of yet, but I'll update this in case anyone reads the posts instead of just looking at the pics like I usually do lol.

Got all the drywall mudded and sanded. Bought an airless sprayer so I'm planning to start spraying primer tomorrow. I'll spray all the primer and I'll spray the ceiling and one wall white. The rest I'll roll black and red.

Also bought a pressure washer. Decided on a Simpson PS3228 from samsclub.com thanks to a couple threads on here. It was only available online but it was $200 cheaper than anywhere else I found the same unit. I'm going to clean the floor after I paint. I haven't decided if I'll seal the floor or not but if I can't get everything off of it I'm not going to. Might have to grind it. I'd like to at least dye the floor black but every product seems to require sealing. If I'm going to go to all that trouble then I want to use legacy's ultimate sealer system. But I'm not putting $1200 worth of sealer over old paint stains so I'll see if I can get everything off

I'm not particularly good with drywall but I spend the last few weeks hanging, taping, mudding and sanding all my drywall. Here it was this morning all sanded

Last year I repainted my entire upstairs in my house. I rolled on 2 coats of Kilz primer because the house had been smoked in, rolled two coats of paint on the ceiling and most walls. I'll never roll that much paint again. So this time I bought an airless sprayer. It took me a while to figure out how to use the thing lol, but once I did it only took a couple hours to spray all the primer. Here it is after 10 gals

Then I sprayed 5 gals of flat white on the ceiling and rolled the front and back walls black

I need to do a second coat and then, looking at the pics with the lift, the right wall will be red and the left wall will be white with red trim around the doors. Might paint the doors red too.

I'm going to paint my garage door tracks red. I figured out how to make my opener work so I'm going to paint all of that red also.

Got all my walls painted and I've been working on trim. I put black rubber wall base on the two walls where the footer sticks out past the drywall. The other two walls the drywall is out further than the concrete so putting it on those walls would look dumb.

I painted the rear window frame and put trim around the window and door. I thought about doing the trim a different color but I'm thinking about painting something on the wall and don't want the trim distracting from the picture.

I started moving stuff back in and trying to get it organized. I put the new door and hood on my 69

Went and got a whole mess of tubing lol. I'm building a frame bench to put a car on for body work and the custom suspension I'm building for my 67. I'm also building a rotisserie which both the 67 and 69 will go on soon. Some of the tubing will become a bench, and some will be the sub frame of the 67.

I bought a stick of 1" angle iron while I was there and threw together a quick shelf for the stereo. This is where the tool box and cabinet will be staying. I'm going to put a bench in front of the barn door, which will put the bench in front of the lift. It'll be on casters so I can easily move it if I need to get a car in or out of the back yard.

The front window was just in the hole and didn't have any trim around it. I added all the trim to that window. Made it more colorful than the rear window

Both man doors in the shop close like ****. This one had the door frame off center so it wasn't inline with the drywall

I moved the frame so it was inline with the drywall on both sides of the wall. Squared it up and secured the door so it closes nice now, and put some red trim around it. I'll paint the door red, and possibly replace it at some point. It was surprisingly heavy, I didn't expect it to be solid wood.

Looking back at your first post in this thread made me realize that you are ripping right along with the remodel; good for you!

Mind if I ask what your 'overseas' job is/was?

I'm a mechanic. I've worked at a few dealers and independents here in the states and I was fixing military vehicles over seas. I spent 4 years in Iraq and just finished a year in Afghanistan. No plans to go back though.

How do you get a job like that overseas? I have heard about these 6-figure contractor jobs but never spoke to or met someone who did that. If my life went differently out of college that would have been something I would have considered. We're you in the military first? Can I ask which company you were with?

The first job I had my co-worker at the dealer we worked for found a listing online so we both applied and went over. We realized when we got their they paid way less than everyone else so we each went to another company later on. The first company was a sub contractor of KBR. KBR had a lot of different jobs and would hire almost anyone so even though their pay ***** it's a way to get started. Once you're over there and have experience over there it's easier to get a job with a better company. I was never in the military but a lot of contractors were. Most of the companies specifically try to recruit ex military. A lot of people I met over there found out about the jobs at job fairs. I don't imagine recruiters like that are in my area, but in some areas it's common. There are a lot of mechanic jobs over there, so as a mechanic it's easy to find a lot of jobs to apply for and if you've been over before, you're more likely to get hired. I worked for LSI as a sub of KBR, then Mantech on one of their vehicle contracts, then Navistar, which is the defense side of International.

Mind posting pictures and specs when you get that frame bench built? I have a VW bug that I need to start restoring and I'm taking the body off the pan (frame), I cold use 2 x 4's but the frame bench might be easier to move around (on wheels).

Nice job by the way.

This thread on pro-touring.com has a lot of talk about frame benches

http://www.pro-touring.com/showthread.php?38625-chassis-jig-design/page1

I was originally going to use H-beam like the one in post 93. I took the chassis fab course at Wyoming tech and they have frame benches made out of H-beam that are machined flat and have holes down the length to bolt fixtures too. After reading that tubing is typically straighter than beam and cheaper, as well as not wanting to go to the expense of having beam machined, I decided on tubing. Since my cars are around 16' long I just had them cut a 40' stick into two 16' and an 8' piece. I'll cut the 8'er in half and use the two 4' pieces between the 16' and then put some legs on it. Haven't decided what to use for wheels yet. I'll post up picks when I get done with it.

Painted my door opener yesterday and wired the wall switch. Put it back up today. Still waiting for my receiver and remotes but it's much nicer to open it with a button rather than by hand.

Been working on getting everything in the shop and organized. My tire equipment showed up last week so yesterday I put them together. I don't really want them in this spot but it's the best place for now until I either add on or at least add a lean to shed on the back side.

I spent the morning building a couple shelves. I used 1" angle to make frames and 3/4" melamine to drop in the angle for the shelf.

Here are the two I've made so far up on the wall and full of stuff. They aren't super heavy duty but there is quite a bit of weight on the right one and it's holding it just fine. I was trying to keep them cheap, 20' sticks of 1" angle were $13 and a 4x8 sheet of melamine is about $40

Trans jack finally showed up. It was on back order for weeks.

Went to home depot to get some things for the house and they had one of these in finally. I don't know if the price is always $298 but they don't usually have them here so I grabbed one.

It's this one

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-40...in-Black-HOTC4010B1ARS/203594224#.UYbNwMrYFug

I think I've seen a thread or two about them on here. It's no Macsimizer but you can't beat the price for the size, and it's got ball bearing slides. I've got a US General bottom and side box. They are decent quality but best price at Harbor Freight for the top and bottom is still over $600. What I like about this Huskey box is that all the drawers are the full width. Two banks of drawers on a 40" box makes for really small and useless drawers. My Macsimizer holds all my regular repair tools. I'm going to keep welding and body work tools in the Husky. Not sure what I'll do with the US General box now.

Been doing a lot of welding the last few days.

Here's my frame bench

My rotisserie almost done

69 on the rotisserie

This morning I removed everything from the shell so I could turn it on it's side. It's no Auto twirler but I only spent $380 building it and I can easily rotate it.

When I bought all the tubing, I got some 2" square for the rotisserie so I grabbed a bunch extra to make a work bench. I built the frame a couple days ago and went and got a sheet of 3/16" mild steel for the top today. I used Colson 4" casters. They are nice and have nice locks on them. I can easily move the bench away from the door if I need to get a car in or out of the back yard. I still need to finish the door.

I didn't expect to spend so much on the bench. It cost about $400, but it's about as good as any could be. I need to put something on the bottom, maybe expanded metal so I can put stuff down there and not have it on the floor.

I used 50' of 2" sq tubing. The frame is 7' 10" long, 30" wide, and about 34" tall. The casters put it at 40". I bought a 4'x8' sheet of 3/16" and had them cut it at 32" wide. That makes the top hang over 1" all around.

I've been eager to take my 67 apart and put it on the frame bench, but since the weather is getting nice and it's drivable and has AC I decided to register and insure it today, and work on the 69 this summer.

I haven't done too much work to the shop itself lately. I just finished remodeling out kitchen, so that took up a lot of my time. I've been fixing a few cars here and there. But All this week I've been cleaning and organizing the shop. Tried to get a decent pic earlier. It was way too cluttered so I got it all cleaned up. I just picked up 2 more 2nd gen Firebirds today. I had to make room for the 79 in the middle of the shot

I made some more shelves and hung them.

It's nice to get stuff off the floor and get rid of the shelves I had taking up floor space, but now the walls look cluttered lol. Maybe if I get a bunch of black and red totes to put everything in they'd look nicer up there than card board and car parts.

I'm going to make a few more shelves, I still need to pipe the air and finish the rear door. Then I want to paint a few things on the walls for decoration. Hopefully sometime soon I can build a lean to shed outside the back to store engines and things in to clear up some shop space.

My metal lathe arrived. Here is was set in place. I finally got it cleaned off and wired up today. Waiting on some cutting tools now.

I started taking my 67 apart to do the body and suspension work this winter

Put in on my frame bench

I did some more work to the back doors. I used some cedar siding and spray painted it black. I kept trying to plan something fancier and cooler looking but everything was going to be too expensive. Even this siding was more than I would like, but it was fairly cheap and looks alright. I might add some windows. I still need to finish the outside with my spare siding, I'll make it so one door over laps the other and covers the gap in the middle

I've wanted a bunch of the totes that are up on my shelf. I couldn't find a good price online, but I went to Walmart the other day and they had them for $6/ea so I bought 10. Then I went back yesterday and they were marked down to $4 lol. Dang the luck, but I bought 4 more. I think they look a whole lot better than a bunch of card board boxes. I'm hoping they have some red ones at Christmas time

It's been a while since I've done anything to the shop itself but I'll post some of what I've been up to.

I put together a few projects. Pieced together a 49 GMC cheap

28wclr7.jpg

I used a bunch of spare parts to get make it drivable. Used a subframe, axle, engine and trans from a 77 Firebird I parted out. Sold it at a profit

2qm3dqh.jpg

While looking for parts for the 49 I ended up buying a 54

Drug it out of the junk yard it had been in for about 30 years.

13yp8hd.jpg

I had the build for the 49 all worked out in my head when I found the 54. I decided to build the 54 to keep and put the 49 together like I did specifically to sell at a profit.

I put the 54 on a Bravada frame to make it awd and cut the bed down. The chassis is basically the same as Syclone/Typhoon stuff and the awd parts can handle a lot of power. I have a 5.3, 4L80e and the shaft to adapt the t case to the trans. I also have a tbird IRS I'll put under it, and I'll turbo the 5.3

33avs3q.jpg

After looking at so many of these trucks and parts and selling one, I see the potential for profit on them, so I pieced together a 53 pretty cheap. It's got a good 302 GMC straight 6. I'm putting it on a 1/2 chassis with Jag suspension front and rear, keeping the 6 and swapping in a S10 5 speed. I don't know if I'll sell it as a rad rod or go to the trouble of painting it

314uzaw.jpg

I bought a 67 GMC a couple years ago with plans to shorten it.

jztfs0.jpg

I recently got it mostly built. I put it on a 5 lug, trailing arm chassis, drop spindles, air bags, 6.0 and 4L80e. It's drivable but I need to finish welding up the bed. I'm just gonna touch up the paint on the seams and drive it like this

I keep some of my future projects behind the shop. There was a dead tree in the way of where I line cars up back there so I cut it down

pbqx1.jpg

It was a lot of work to get the stump cut free and pulled out. I drug it into the shop and used my cherry picker to get it in my truck and hauled it off

iema1t.jpg

I got tired of the trees in front of the shop making a mess of my cars. They didn't provide shade anywhere useful so I cut them down.

That made parking along the fence a lot nice and I keep all my drivers out front

dfk47a.jpg

I've been saving to redo the driveway and pour concrete where all the dirt was. I moved all the cars out back

They did the excavation and base last week

2nbt5jo.jpg

Looks a whole lot better already

They were gonna start pouring Friday but it was too windy, so they should be starting tomorrow.

Looks good. I'm excited to not have to deal with mud anymore and actually be able to dribble a basketball on it lol. I'm gonna need a better looking backboard now

Man the things you've been able to piece together there are pretty nice, I'm a huge fan of that style truck and of course the firebirds too. I'll be tagging along to see what you do here in the future. Make sure you post some info the work you did on the suspension on the white one, I'm curious what you did for that custom suspension.

Thanks man. I haven't built the suspension for the Firebird yet. I've got a front C5 suspension I'll use the spindles and A arms, and a Mustang rack to build the front. I was planning to use a 9" and build a 3 link, but I've been thinking about IRS lately. I found a good deal on rear C5 suspension I'll be buying tomorrow. I'm gonna use a 8.8" Ford Explorer diff, unless I decide against that then I'll use an IRS 9" diff, but that's a big price jump. I think the 31 spline Explorer diff should be strong enough for a car I won't drag race. Baer 6 piston brakes all around, not sure on shocks yet but I want Ridetech 3 way adjustable coil overs. I've got a t56 and EFI to go with my 455. I'll eventually build a 461 out of a 400 block

Looks awesome. Glad to see you got the concrete in. Working in the mud and always tracking it in the garage is a royal pain in the a$$.

Love to know more about that lathe you bought; brand, model, cost.

It's a PM-1236 from Precision Matthews

It was $3550 shipped.

There are a few options for 12x36 Asian made lathes in the same price range, but the PM-1236 is made in Taiwan and everything I read says it's better than the similar Chinese made lathes. It seems to be the popular choice for a new lathe that size.

The finish on it is cheap and applied poorly. It looks worse in person than it does in pics. I'm tempted to take it apart and repaint it. But it does what it should for the price of the machine. It's probably capable of being more precise than I'll ever need.

The only option I could find for a similar sized American made lathe is the Southbend SB1050(not positive it's US made). It looks like a much higher quality machine, but the price is close to $18,000. That's a huge gap between a Taiwan made machine and an American made machine.

x0QHi4M.jpg

Maybe there are options in between I just don't know about. But for a 12x36 lathe, the PM-1236 is a good choice for a hobbyist.

I've heard great things about Matt. I ended up with the Shop Fox version at a price I couldn't refuse but PM was on my short list.
