Good Evening Fellas,

Looking for some electrical expertise. I am currently building a 2nd floor bonus room above the garage and am looking to do some creative lighting tricks. I currently have 24 T8 bulb florescent fixtures tied into a single switch. I am looking for ways to have them come on automatically when the garage door opens, but also sense when someone is coming down the stairs from the bonus room and turn on. I attempted to use. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DA4NY8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01 however it was very complicated and I could not get it to quite program to my liking. It always seemed to turn on and off inconsistently, but it could handle the light load. I am now leaning towards http://www.amazon.com/Chamberlain-WSLCEV-Remote-Control-Switch/dp/B009NTV7O2/ref=pd_sim_60_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1TVGKRDSWCAYAGSF4V0S
however it is only rated for 300W max so I would need to know how to use a relay of some sort. I know it would not turn on autocmatically by motion, however at least I could remote turn them on so as to not fall down the stairs. It also links up to the door for automatic turning on when opening, but unfortunately it has no light sensor so it will also turn them on in the daylight. Any suggestions?

You need a lighting contactor. (This is what they are made for.). Your switch drives the contactor, similar to a relay, and the contactor isolates the high wattage load from your switch.

I use several of them in tandem to control my lights and garage ventilation system from wall switches and my garage door openers.
