Is there a way to turn on the lights outside of my garage via a spare channel on my garage door opener remote? I'm thinking there has to be some sort of replacement switch out there for just this sort of thing but all that I can find is whole house control systems that I can control from my PC or iPod but they are wayyy out of my budget.

What is your budget? This will dictate what suggestions you may receive from the GJ members . . .

Looking for the same. Barn is at least 200' away and it needs to be wired to an outside light. Under $50.

Ive seen the remote plugins, some even compatible with garage remotes, however I'm looking to wire it into an existing hardwired circuit.

I would get a garage sale opener motor unit that matchs your current one.
You dont need the rail.
Disconect the motor.
Now you have a remote controled light fixture.

How about something like this.http://www.smarthome.com/7168L/Chamberlain-CLLA1-Clicker-Compatible-Remote-Light-Control/p.aspx
Smarthome has a few similar products.
For this to work you would have to cut into the light wiring so it can be switched both ways.
A cleaner way way could be IR motion sensor on the outside lights. They generally have a timer so will go out after a set time time. Mine also comes on at 1/2 brightness at dusk and then goes out after 6 hrs. Nice security feature if anyone stalks around outside.
But then I am presuming you are driving up to your garage at night. Maybe you want to just turn the lights on independantly for some reason?

An IR motion sensor connected to your outside lights might work for you.
I have my sensors, which are built into the lamps, set to come on at 1/2 brightness at dusk and go off after 6 hrs, they can go dusk to dawn. Whatever the setting, if someone trips the sensor the lamp will come on full brightness for a set time, 5mins or so, if it is dark outside.
The lamps I have, cheapie Ocean State lamps, have a connection so you can link lights together. One on, all on. You can also buy these motion sensors as seperate units so you then wire it to your existing outside lights.
I have a floodlight on the rear of my garage. In this unit I disabled the light coming on at dusk bit so it only lights up when it is dark and 'something' trips it.
