Good morning,
We have an older (20+ years) Hunter ceiling fan( dead *** quite, kickass air movement) that we replaced with a newer ( not as quiet) Hunter model that was able to use a light kit. We have sold the house and are moving to Tennessee. I would like to use the older fan in our bedroom at the new place but would like to run the fan from a wireless remote as the switched power would be from across the room. The fan has 3 wires, black, black with sliver? tracer and a white. Is it possible to add some sort of wireless remote to just the fan leaving switched power at the wall, or is there a better option? TIA

Is it one of the "original" design with the larger motor?

I've never been a big fan of the remotes. You can get them separately though.

My favorite set up is a switch for the light and a separate constant hot for the fan so you can just use the pull chain.

I ask because I don't think I have ever seen a remote for the original motor.

The original has a very heavy cast motor -- they mount differently.

They also have oil in them -- so they will leak if not level and you hav eto check when you reinstall. they make no noise and run forever

Yeldogt, Mine must not be an "original" style motor, dry motor, no oil. I guess using the word "older" would be a relative term. Looking at the tag the motor is an offshore unit. That being said I still feel it is repurposing it to our new home. Looks like I can get wall switches that also work from a remote.

Have not called them in a while -- Hunter has a technical line. Try calling them and they can give you the type of motor

Home Depot and Lowes sell remote control ceiling fan kits that are universal for most brands of fans.

We did exactly what the OP is asking about in our living room. The ceiling fan was hard wired into the electrical wiring and was not controlled by a switch on the wall. You had to pull the chain to turn the fan on and off. There was no light kit on this fan.

My wife wanted a remote control for the fan, and she also wanted a light put on it. The fan is about 20 years old, and I can't find a brand name on it anywhere. I went to Home Depot and bought a universal remote control kit as well as a light kit. It was harder to find a brass light kit than I thought, but HD had one.

Anyway, I installed the remote control kit and light kit and both work great. As long as there is room inside the housing that mounts up against the ceiling to cover the wiring, the universal kit should fit.

If you buy one, and try it, and it doesn't fit or work, just take it back and HD or Lowes will give you your money back as long as it is within 30 days.

I say go for it. The universal remote control kit cost about $30 bucks.

I added a Hunter Remote control to a fan in my parents living room. The fan could be turned on whenever via the pull chain and the fan lights were hooked up to 3 way switch. They liked the switched lights so I installed the remote control hooked up to only the fan wires.

It all depends on the motor .. and to some degree the space.

His fan is old -- they used various types of motors back then. Today -- most fans have options or come with the remotes .. so it's easier.

I just was looking at "modern fan company" ... for my new build. My normal brand and they are switching over the motors they use -- different control vs old. I'm actually installing two NOS hunter originals in my new build as well. They are so high I cant easily get to them --
