Remote Hose Clamp Pliers

Hi all,

I’m looking to pick up a pair of the remote hose clamp pliers. I’m thinking either the Astro 9409a or the Mayhew 28680. Other than the $30 price difference is there a practical reason to pick one over the other?

The AP ones have a thicker cable, they are also the original makers of the tool. Mayhew and others are copies just with some changes.

I've had good luck with the Astros' the cable on all of them eventually wears out.

I just bought a OEM brand one at autozone for diy use it has worked great and is lifetime warranty for about $35.00

Yes - the Mayhew won't make you spread your hand so far apart like the Astro does. Think big clamps like on water pump hoses.

I don't know about either of those brands, but I have a Craftsman one and can say that you'll love this tool. It comes in hand fairly often.

I have the older craftsman one, It works... so ... the newer ones I notice does lot more different sizes. But hey so far it's fine for small cars, especially the vw.. those ******* engineers love clamps and hex key/ torx bolts.

whichever type you get, ensure you get one with multiple teeth, kind of like a saw blade on the lock. Avoid the single hook lock type.

The single hook lock only gives you the option of fully open and you may want something less than that when repositioning the clamp. If so that means your hand pressure is all you have.

Notice on the link above that the current Mayhew version is still made in France.

These Facom pliers is what I intend on getting next. They're based off the Mayhew 28640 design which is no longer available from Mayhew. The handles are already very nice but the dual component Vinyl/Santoprene grip would be pure heaven.

I have the old SK straight jaw version of those and i don't find the grips to be that heavenly In fact, they don't seem to like brake clean much.
Do you really like that that shielded cable? i had a pair once with the semi ridgid cable and I didn't care for it. i like the flexibility of the regular cable.

The astros look almost identical to the old craftsman's that I have. Theyve been good but I did have to warranty them when I broke the tab off that goes over the clamp ear. Not sure if I didnt have it completely over the ear or what. Theyre handy other than that.

I would most likely replace the flex cable with a regular cable. Mayhew still has the parts available for the 28640 and the 28650. For Santoprene, I clean it with that white creamy Go-Jo hand cleaner. Works good on vinyl plier grips too.

People complain of some models having a cable that breaks, or of the hose clamp piece being too weak/flimsy of steel, or of the hose clamp piece being too wide and not working with smaller hose clamps. The complaints vary by model, but none of the reviews of any brand's iteration of these are complaint-free.

I still have my Mayhew hose clamp pliers and they're doing excellent. They're the 26680. I never did get the Facom pair I said I was going to get in an earlier post. I should go back and edit that post when I get some more edits. I already used up my 10 edits for a 24 hour period.

What's the best thing about the Mayhew pliers? They don't force you to open your hand up real wide for bigger clamps like the Astro's do.
