Remote Switching

Enlighten me on how to do this.

I have a detached pole building thats about 40' from my house, Metal Sided Inside and out. I want to be about to turn on the outside lights in the garage from the house. Really just one light but I would do more if feasible. I do have a router in the garage for wifi, Internet access. A switch on the wall in the house would be perfect.

Please let me know what you all have done to get this accomplished.

I currently do this using a Wink Home Hub and a zwave switch. Lots of options just need to pick a platform. I went with Wink due to several "languages" it speaks and simple app. I also switch my compressor on and off with it using a zwave outlet and a 110/220 relay.

My buddy's metal pole barn is further away than that. He bough an inexpensive wireless 3 way switch for the exact same purpose. Work's well. Sorry I don't know the make or model.

The "wireless" half looks like a wall plate with a standard light switch except that it is about 1/2" total thickness and attaches to the wall with double sticky tape !

As people have mentioned - Z wave

Z wave uses a 'mesh' network - each device that you have can help relay the signal to the device your trying to control. So, the more device = better coverage

I use an Ankuoo Neo switch in my garage for a similar purpose. It just needs a wifi signal and is a stand alone device, no hub required. It is controlled by an app on my phone and will work anywhere my phone has internet access. The switch can be setup to be turned on or off on a timer or on a daily schedule or randomly to act like someone is home. It is probably lacking internet security but I don't really care. Ankuoo also makes a switched receptacle which I use for the block heater on my tractor. It is nice during the winter to be able to switch on the heater from work so I can snowblow when I get home.

My reply was to the OP but in thinking about your desired application does the AC turn on immediately after power is applied? My window A/C's have digital controls and won't come back on automatically after a power failure which is what switching the power at the outlet would essentially be. If your A/C comes back on after a power failure using an Ankuoo or WeMo switched receptacle to control an industrial contactor / relay that was sized appropriately for the AC compressor motor and had a 120v AC control voltage would be pretty straight forward.

Yes my 120v does and I use a wemo insight switch to control it, the 240v does comeback on after power failure just looking for a way to control it that's why i ask about the 110/220 relay. Thanks

I need to look into this further. I wired four duplex receptacles in the ceiling of my garage to control four rows of LED fixtures. I should have put two switches with two hot leads but I wired it so all fixtures will be off one switch.

I would like to control be able to split the lights in the garage and it seems wireless is the solution. Is there a way to control one plug of each of the 4 duplexes via wireless?

I used GE Z-wave light switch to 40 amp contactor I like the z-wave over the WeMo because of the distance I had to go.

I just put in this switch (see link below) in my detached garage about 120 feet from the door to the house where all our out side light switches are. We mounted the supplied remote there and it works perfectly every time at that distance through the house walls and garage walls. I have another one in my basement for lights in tv room also works great there turning lights on from the bottom of stairs in stead walking through dimly light room to find next rooms switch.

Whats the HP rating on the compressor?

The Elk contactor is simply a contactor with a 3-wire plug attached to the coil. It'd be easy as pie to duplicate using whatever size contactor/relay/solid state relay you might need.
