I would like to find a way to use a switch to control a soffit light circuit on a detached garage that is on a separate electrical service. The detached garage is approximately 100 feet from the house and not in a clean line of site.

I have read other similar searches but they did not address the separate circuit circumstance.

Thank you.

I have something similar to what is in this video. I use one to control a stop/go light in my shop, but that is only about 40'. I also use them to control the 3 ceiling fans in the shop. Look for one with a long range.

Thanks Phil. I have used these to control items plugged into an outlet but I am looking to be able to switch on a light circuit - maybe something like a relay. I also think the range is an issue.

If you have internet in the shop, surely there is a solution to turn on lights out there with a phone app. :bounce:

Two of my extended family are using the Lutron Caseta stuff for various things. Not sure of the limitations, but the selection of devices and features seems to keep growing.

totally depends what the ultimate need is. If for example you want to walk out there in the middle of the night and make sure no critters are between you and it, a motion sensor might work. Adding walk lights or a flood light from the house might help.

If you were trying to make it look like someone was around when you heard noise you could add a motion sensor out there. If you just want light, ambiance of some kind on your property the suggestion of a timer would work. Dusk to dawn sensors are available.

If you simply want to use an app on your smart phone to control it, and wifi exists at both locations use any of the wifi switches that can be controlled over the Internet.

If you want to control it from your house with a switch as you go in and out the door, use a low voltage transformer like heating and AC to trip a relay for the circuit. You'll need to set it up 3 way if you want a switch at each end.

With internet access there are a few different wifi switches you could use. But they're like potato chips... once you have one you'll want some more :)
