I’ve never been stuck by a stubborn crankshaft bolt. Yesterday I took the vehicle off the lift, rolled it beside my compressor room. With. 6 foot airline hooked straight to the tank neither of my IR impact guns would budge this Toyota 22mm crank pulley bolt. I did some online searching and found Lisle and IR make high mass impact sockets. It’s like swinging a big hammer vs a small one. Nobody had one in town so I started adding wheel weights to a 22mm deep socket, and what do you know it worked!! Have a look, lol. Next time I encounter this I’ll know what to do.

it's extra mass located away from the rotational axis. the farther, the better. the effect is proportional to the square of the distance.

this exaggerated design drives the point home. though the outer edge is just a thin hoop, that bit of material contributes a lot due to its distance from the axis.

Just went through this with my BMW - started with a short 22mm, wouldn't budge. Changed to a long 22mm, voila. And this was with the medium torque IR cordless - I have the high torque IR, but couldn't fit it, because I didn't want to take out the radiator.

Bump start method.

I tried it, the starter was too weak and there wasn’t enough rotation available to allow the engine to fire. Had my buddy bump the ignition as I leaned on the end of the breaker bar with a long 2x4, the last thing I needed would have been a rounded head bolt.
