Just wondering which is the better "tool" as I assume they do the same thing? What is the major difference between them both and which one would be a better purchase?

It all depends on the situation, I have even used portable mills to remove large broken studs (for work). I would probably get both as well as a set of the square ones.

I don't know what the cost of those sets are but you'd gladly pay twice the price when you need them.

I don't like either one, a drill has more power and likely to break the extractor, and you can't "feel" it as well.

My preference is an irwin extractor. You pre-drill the hole and use the biggest extractor you can and using a wrench, heat, and lube, works almost every time!

I actually have both of those items pictured, both made by Alden. As was said above, they both work on the same principal.
My opinion, from using both, is the top item is better. the bottom item is not bad but it is a biy fussier about threading the "grabber" part down just right.
I personally always grab the upper item first.
