Removing broken torx bit.

As the title suggests, I broke a torx bit in the screw holding the chuck on my drill. I had removed it to live it up and intended on changing it out for a new one, but alas my order was delayed. Rather than go without a drill, I put it back together while I waited for the part.

Low and behold in tightening the screw, my hand slipped, cocked the extension on an angle and sheared off the end of the torx bit. I can't for the life of me get it out now.

Any ideas would be appreciated, as I now have the chuck ready to install!

This is why I rely on the Brain Trust that is GJ. That never occurred to me for a second!

Update. Measure twice, cut once... Took off the head of the bolt instead of cutting above it (1/4" higher would have been perfect). And now I'm buying a new drill.

I believe that should be a lh screw. A regular drill bit might grab and unscrew it.

Actually you only need to add the part you cut to your purchase, not the whole drill.

Use a little Loctite on the drill arbor as normal drilling will tighten the chuck and only reversing the drill will try to screw the chuck off.

Most drills have enough jam to snap the head off the retaining bolt.

OP, I'm assuming that you now can't remove the chuck from the drill. Put the drill in reverse and hold the chuck tight in a vise. Should be able to spin the chuck off after the retaining screw breaks. You might have to lock the drill from turning, then twist the drill by hand to snap off the retaining bolt head.

I would have just used the drill for a while, the broken off torx bit would have come loose on its own after a while and fallen out from the retaining screw.
