Removing cigarette smoke from garage

Canada, eh!
My mom smokes in her single car garage (attached to house.) It's a thick haze of smoke in there, and I really don't know how she can stand it. I smoked for 22+yrs and quit, and I don't expect my mom to, but its just hard to breathe walking into that and it makes everything stink like smoke (mainly her!), and there's nothing good about it at all for her. The garage will never see a car in it while she lives there which is fine. She has a desk setup in there and a comfy chair (and I store my extra tool cabinets there which used to get coated in yellow grime till I made some covers for them!) It is partially insulated so doesn't fall below freezing rarely and she has an IR heater to warm her. In the summer she will open the door at times (not enough), but in the cold its only cracked open 2-3" which doesn't do anything for getting rid of the smoke! Also this allows critters (mainly mice, though we did find an opossum in there once!) to come in which I have to then trap and get rid of for her as she won't do that. I've been able to keep anything from going inside the house by sealing up areas pretty good, but it's only time before they make their way inside inside!

I needed some ideas of an inexpensive way to remove the haze from the garage for her please. I really hate to see her sit in this for hours+ at a time sometimes (she will sit out there and read, or do crosswords, or chat on the phone, etc.) :(

Whatever I would use needs to be wall mounted about 7' up, go through a brick wall that only has board in the inside (not insulated) and has 2x4 studs inside, there is an electrical wire I can use below it for switch/power too, so think this would be fairly easy to setup. Its under the master bedroom, ceiling is average insulation and garage is medium-tight for air leaks. The garage door is quite well sealed to the outside, inside is so-so sealed. I was thinking a 200CFM+ bathroom fan with a vent out the wall? OR should I look at proper wall exhaust fan? I know I technically need to feed as much air in as I do going out, but hoped this would at least get rid of the majority of this haze she sits in as the inside would pull air from the interior leaks? I've been looking online up here (Ontario Canada) and looks like some fans can get pricey fast!

Please don't make this a debate about smoking. She hears it enough from me about how bad this is for her sitting in this so much!

Thanks for an info/help anyone can provide :)

your best bet then is to get a whole house fan and install into the attic space, you can wire to the lights so when they come on the fan does, or have it separate with a switch. but will she always turn it on is the question.

any exhaust fan would not be suitable for your climate, pulling air out "smoke" means replacing the air with fresh.

reason the smoke is staying in the garage. I hope you find a solution!

When you figure out how to vent, wash the inside of the garage door and walls with Krud Cutter. I had a condo with a heated and AC'd garage, the garage was part of the house single zone system (think 1990 standards) the old white towels turned yellow after washing the door and walls when prepping to sell..

This is a builder grade house that was cheaply done in the late 60s early 70s, its not well sealed anywhere other then what I've improved like the door etc. I grew up there and my moms done little to update much other then paint and basics, though she redid windows, doors, floors and kitchen.

Whatever you put in she will not use it. You are in Canada, eh? When the temp starts dropping and the fan runs you are going to be heating the replacement air and she is going to be chilly while it heats up, which means she isn’t going to use it. Her house, her choice on the smoke.

Because you can not eliminate the source of the smoke, IMHO there is not much you can do, after the smoke generator has departed the scene then the Ozone Generator followed by a spraying of KILZ will reduce the odor.

She said she was open to the idea of installing an exhaust fan. She just doesn't want to spend much lol... Whether we can get her to use it or not I don't know but at least I tried. I do really hate to see her sit in there in smoke that thick, it will do nothing but make her sick :(

I mean, she already has inhaled the smoke that has been put into the air........... what more harm is it doing
If I can get it out she doesn't have to sit in it breathing even more in. I go in there at times and its real thick, my brothers visit her and its 3x worse!

Point of use welders exhaust fan. Set it up on a movement or light sensor to automatically turn on.
Place the intake close to a side table with ash tray, next to a comfy chair.
There's always enough leakage through the garage door to make up air exhausting.

Thats what I'm hoping for with a bathroom type fan, ambenz. Some are pretty powerful 200+CFM and it's only a tiny single car garage (that my large car would never fit in even if it was empty!!)

Nick, she said she was open to the idea, so I'm hoping she uses it if I install something...

It is the "Idea" I am selling here, he can make something like this! Besides, we love spending other peoples money, don't we!?!?! You never know how well to do a member is....he might have a welder in the same garage and could use something like this!

They made round duct fans like this one I have for my bathroom...just add some duct, a cone sheet metal end attached to a old articulating lamp arm and you have a good smoke eliminator!

Actually what ambenz listed was pretty well the first thing I had thought of before thinking it might be to complex a setup for my mom to bother with.

with a hose over towards where she sits:

There is a 'step' in the garage ceiling that would be perfect for this to sit against where it goes about 8" lower due to the bathroom above the one end of the garage. Or it would be a good spot for a bathroom fan to be attached, and either could go straight out the side of the wall...

I looked at some smokeeaters of different brands and they are way outta our price range :/

Keep an eye out for a used one. If smoking laws in Canada are similar to the US (I have no idea?) there are likely are likely tons of businesses that have one and no longer need it. I've seen a few pop up on Facebook Marketplace over the last few years and it's not at all anything I've been searching for.

I do not allow cigarette smoking in my shop. I had posted a lathe for sale on CL. Mister Attitude showed up with a pipe hanging out of his mouth. I told him I have a no smoking rule in the shop. He got angry and gave me some drama and attitude. I walked him to his imported car and sent him on his way.
One of my neighbours is a drunk and he smokes one cigarette after another. Needless to say, he smells like ****. He fell onto my John Deere "E" type hit and miss engine and broke the ignitor. While he was struggling to his feet, he sat on the bumper of my 1940 Ford and left a scratch in the $24749.03 paint, under a headlight. He is banned for life. I was able to buff the scratch to acceptable.

Sounds like your mother might be a 'chain smoker' (please don't take this as an insult). That said, run an exhaust fan as mentioned above. Or have her smoke outside or at least blow the smoke outside through slightly opened door. Also try to get her to understand that 'hanging around' in her garage is not a healthy idea (smoking or not when it's cold).

My mom said I was ok to do something, but hasn't been very into the idea anyways it seems. I think it will end up like Nick or Jackfre mentioned above and won't be used. I'll try to hook it into the lights so it comes on when ever she's out there.

I've been trying to convince her of that FMB4, but she doesn't seem to care, hence my statement above ^ .
I hate to see her do this to herself though :( I quit to late and have asthma now and don't want to see anyone in my family go through that or worse...

So, what does an imported car has anything to do with you rant?

Please explain to us if an imported car is a good thing or a bad thing. We'd like to know your opinion on this.
