Removing drill press chuck?

I picked up a cheap HF bench top drill press, and need to remove the chuck. It doesn't have a slot on the side to drift the chuck assembly out of the head, any suggestions on how to remove it? I assume it's a tapered Morse style, but not sure. Thanks!

It's probably an integral spindle with a Jacobs taper on the nose. You'll need chuck removal wedges. Basically, the chuck is presssd right into the nose of the spindle.

Thanks, that's kind of what I thought. How do I go about "pressing" the chuck back in place after I finish?

Clean both tapers with some acetone to get them nice and clean. Make sure there's no burrs. Retract the chuck jaws all the way into the body. Give it a good push on to the spindle taper. It should stick. Then take a lead hammer and give it a few firm taps to seat it.

Any time I've tried using my drill press as a milling machine, the chuck and taper assembly fall right out, LOL.

I've never used wedges. I give the chuck a wack with a brass hammer. If it doesn't give, I leave it alone. Only one chuck ever failed to drop.

You might also try using a straight claw hammer, or a thin pry bar, as a wedge to get it off.
