You might be able to engrave checkering over it, but you need to talk to a good gunsmith to see if that is an option. Otherwise a new receiver is about the only choice. Just like a tat it's easier to get one than to get rid of one.

Any more from you and I’ll introduce you to my little friend Raymond......

Set it up on a mill and, mill a slight recess in that area

Other than being at a slight angle, I think Raymond did a fine job with his engraver. That engraving isn't going anywhere without a lot of filling, milling or sanding then a re-blue. Not to mention the other engravings are going to be washed out and shallow once the offending engraving is removed.

Id say live with it.

Not an impossible thing to fix with the right skills and tools, but not a DIY project. Someone like Mike Hunter of Hunters Restoration could do this easily, but the shotgun would have to be worth quite a bit to make it worthwhile.

If it's the first time you try to fix something like this, and you don't have the tools to selectively remove metal and keep the surface flat, and don't have the equipment and skill to correctly touch up the engraving, re-finish the surface, and re-blue the receiver, it will come out looking way worse than it is now. It's like trying to repair bad concrete, anything you do to it pretty much makes it look worse.

I restore and build relatively high end custom rifles and have a good grasp of metal finishing, and it would push my skills to remove this and have it look original when I was done with it.

It could be pushed out from the back and milled flat but that is not DIY work and would require some very special talent.

Leave it and use it.
Every gun has a history and this a part of yours.

What brand/model shotgun?

Depending on value of the gun, solutions high to low:

Buy a new receiver.

Epoxy fill or metal spray/weld, sand, polish and DuraCoat the receiver and barrel.

X2 Leave it and use it.

Looks like maybe a Remington 1100? If so it is not worth the added expense to have it worked on by a Gun Smith, if you ever want to sell it that is... What you paid for it and the expense to have a Smith repair it is not cost effective.

If I wanted a gun without the engraving, I would have bought a gun without the engraving. I'm guessing you probably got the gun for a really good price because of that engraving, and it is what it is. Regardless of how you decide to remove or hide the it, it will likely never look like it did before it was engraved.

Maybe you could engrave your name over top of it, only deeper.

Start listing other names under it... and cross them off... it will add fear.

lol....

Maybe try to cold-blue it first and see how less noticeable it is...

There won't be a cheap & easy fix, and unless the guy is very valuable you could easy exceed the cost of what you paid...

If you wanted to cerakote it then they could probably fill it in with an epoxy and smooth it out. But if you wanted to keep the blueing either the whole side would have to be sanded down depending if it was shallow enough or welded up and then smoothed down....
