I'm going to remove my extension cords stapled to the rafters and replace them with mc cable and install outlets, and plug my lights into the outlets.

The problem is the local home improvement stores only sell 5/16 mc cable but only have 3/8 connectors. Can I use the 3/8 connectors with the 5/16 cable?

Can I just use romex instead and still be compliant?

you can use the larger straps on that cable. if its looser than you like give them a squeeze with some pliers. for exposed work most jurisdictions won't allow romex. you may get away with it if you run on top of the rafters and say you plan to drywall.

Current code makes no distinction between mc cable and romex with regard to the requirement of physical protection if subject to damage. Some jx I guess allow mc but not romex. I think the answer is NO ONE KNOWS.
