Removing Sealer before coating

Hello everyone,

I have a slab that is about 4 months old that had VOCOMP-20 water based curing and sealing compound sprayed on within a few hours after it was poured. My question is, I am looking for a no fuss floor for this working garage that will see all types of fluid and welding etc. do i need to grind my floor first before adding any type of sealer like HD40 to it?

Bandit, you can probably strip that wb sealer off, then HD40.

Next, if you are going to remove a concrete conditioner and replace it, you want to make sure that you are replacing it with something that is worth the time and money you are going to invest. What are you trying to accomplish and what is the best product to accomplish that with? Do you want a sheen or a gloss to the floor? Are you looking for a decorative as well as performance enhancing coating? How many square feet? You mentioned welding, will you protect the floor from weld slag?

What would I use to strip it off?

Once dried, the material may be removed with a solvent, such as xylene, toluene, or SEALTIGHT CLEANER...

I didn't read up on what I had at all, thank you for the link. Water still puddles a bit on the floor and it doesn't seem like it would protect it against any stains. But I believe it only has 1 coat. I love the look of a shinier gloss floor like a polished look, polishing is not in my budget though. I haven't really seen a decorative coating that will stand up to the work I would do. The floor is 900 sq-ft. I probably won't protect the floor from welding slag, welding under rigs and such protecting it probably won't happen.

We have a low solids urethane that can be applied with a garden sprayer that will provide great protection and a decent level of gloss -- its not going to hold up to slag though. Depending on the texture of your existing concrete you could take a product like HD40 or TL40 and burnish it for some level of gloss, but it likely won't maintain that for long.

In the link I gave you there is a contact us button. I would ask them specifically what to use to remove their product if that is the route you want to go. If you do that, either use a densifer and 8505 or the urethane or IMHO you have done a lot of work and not accomplished much.

Good points. Stick with a StainGuard or Densifier type product. You will be happier.

Thanks for the responses guys. So if it were you, do you think it is worth stripping off and doing a densifier with a sealer or should I just do a few more coats of the vocomp and see how it does for a few years?

If you like it and you have some handy, add some more.
Typically, cure n seal products (sealer portion) have limited lifespans.
However, they usually marry well to themselves.
