Hello everyone, I bought this lathe off someone for $50 and I got the motor working, but for the life of me I cant get this shaft out. I wanted to replace the belt. I have beat it, with no effect except damaging the shaft. I tried vice grips...heating it. I dont know what to do...

Thank you!

This is the first lathe I have ever had. So it could be Im just an idiot and am completely missing something

Does the pulley wheels have a set screw buried/hiding in a grundy hole locking it in place?

It's hard to tell as the pics posted a little blurry and small, so can't really zoom in well enough. Right now it looks like the shaft would come out on the non threaded side. Penetrating juice goes a long way if you give it enough time to penetrate.

Agree with above post, if you're struggling and all you need to do is replace the belt and the bearings feel fine and spindle turns smoothly? Then go with a link belt that fits your 4L pulley's, Harbor freight sells them cheap with the 20% coupon and save yourself some grief & time. It will work fine and will then even add a little color to your new toy.

I did remove the set screws in the pulley. Not sure how to determine if it has a integral lock or not. But everyone thank you for the link belt idea!

If anyone has recommendations for lathe parts, attachments, or beginner's projects Im all ears. Im excited to use it!

Thanks again!

That pulley and neighboring items on that spindle may have Woodruff keys.

Do you know what type of lathe it is and the model?

And yes, Definitely time to invest in a new camera/phone : )

I would suggest that you degrease the part so that you can determine how many setscrews may be in that set up. It's not unheard of the have two set screws in the same hole one on top of the other. Or one SS near each end.

Another option is the pulley spun on the shaft, and the shaft has a score mark, keeping the pulley from sliding off.

Does the pulley rotate with the setscrew out? On a Delta there are 2 set screws, in two different grooves.

Sometimes people put two set screws down the same hole (with the second one used as a jam nut).

I had the same problem with an old craftsman lathe that I inherited from my grandfather. As suggested, I ended up getting a link belt. Does anyone know whether the shaft would be expected to be right hand thread or left hand thread? As I applied more and more force I always wondered if I was loosening or tightening.
