I just picked up a used Craftsman 16" variable speed scroll saw in good condition. All it really needed was a good cleanup. I used a maroon Scotchbrite pad on an orbital sander which did a pretty good job in removing most of the stains. Is there anything else I can try to restore a lustre? Or.....is this the best it will get due to the grind pattern?IMG_4909.JPGIMG_4909.JPGIMG_4910.JPGIMG_4911.JPG

The little specks of black in the grooves? Soak w Simple Green, scrub with the grooves after a while using a cut down used toothbrush. If that doesn't get it I've got nothing.

Johnsons paste wax in the yellow can. Any stains you can not get out are patina.

Even with new cast iron machine work srfaces they will get patina sooner or later. You can not fight it!

Being that Johnson's paste wax has been discontinued, what's a good replacement?

Thanks! It took a fair amount of scrubbing to get it to this point.

JPW may be discontinued but there are a number of others that will work. Search for furniture paste wax.

Depending on how bad the surface is, yours looks good, I start with 120 on the belt sander. I will finish up the table with 1500 & than clear coat so I never have to deal with rust again. Once clear coated a light wax to keep the material moving smooth & touch up with clear as needed.

A Surface Conditioning Tool will do the trick if you have one. If not, it's a good reason to add another tool to the arsenal ;)
