Renewing an old Sears 6-1/8 Jointer Planer

I picked up an old Sears Craftsman 6-1/8 Jointer Planer for $30 at a garage sale (Model 113.206931). I dug up the manual (attached) and intend to make it usable again....unless anyone can convince me it's dead.

Motor runs, belt is usable. The blades turn without any whining or squealing.... the biggest problem I see is that the surfaces are thoroughly rusted. I have the tools to refinish the metal surfaces but am wondering about the knives and perhaps the bearings in the cutting wheel. Does anyone have any recommendations on replacement knives and anything else I should be updating? Will do a full setup & tune according to the manual once the surfaces are refinished.

cheers,
Andy

I think mine is the same model. I would clean it up if the bearings feel OK just pull the knives and sharpen them and run it.

I made a jig for the belt sander to sharpen my planer and joiner blades, works really well. Basic grind on that, then take the burr of with a fine Arkansas stone I can resharpen the 4 blades in the 20 inch planer under 15 minutes.

Unfortunately the knives are rusted stuck into the wheel. Despite my best efforts and plenty of wd-40, I managed to strip most of the screws holding them in. They're socket head hex machine screws as pictured.
I've never done a drill/tap but it seems that's my next move. What exactly do I need for that?c8e7b32befbb258eb547f2b0a4f147bb.jpg

Can you remove the whole thing? I'd go with a more...immersive...approach

I had that same jointer many years ago. I hated how short it was, and mostly that it only had adjustment for infeed table---no easy adjustment for the outfeed. I see them selling for around $40 in working condition with motor, and would never own another one like that.

I suppose I could but I'd rather not fiddle with the bearings and retaining rings if I don't have to.

I actually managed to get all the screws out using just wd-40 and metal-on-metal persuasion. I'll need to replace them but at least they're out!

Now I'm having trouble getting the knives/retaining wedges out. They're just so old and rusted they're not prying out like they should. I got one but the other two are sure stuck. I don't want to pry too hard against the frame for fear of damaging the bearings. Maybe I'll try some heat tomorrow.

I'd put that cleaning solution (WD-40) back on the shelf and get a better penetrant like Kroil or PB Blaster. Wet the area down every day for a week and I think you'll have better results.

It looks like that poor thing sat out in the rain or at least under a hole in the roof.

Give the tables a "hair cut". Use a single edge razor blade to scrap the tables. Then polish with maroon scotch brite and WD-40. Cast iron is easy to clean and cleans up well.
