I have a ford Y-block I am rebuilding. A previous owner (not me!!!) broke 3 of the 4 bell housing bolts off in the block. I have never had much success with any sort of twist type easy out. I have not found any other broken ones (nor have I broken any) elsewhere.

While doing research online I came across a german made set from Rennsteig (knipex has something to do with it...on youtube anyway). I know Knipex is a great brand of all sorts of pliers.

Has anyone used these yet? Any success?

Brian B,

Check out this Garage Journal extractor comparison written by one of our members: LINK. He highly recommends the Rennsteig bolt extractors.

I bought a set, based on his writeup^, and used them the other day on a Grade 5 (soft) lag bolt. They frikin WORK!

I tried a SO spiral extractor first but just spun the material out (b/c it was too soft). Then used a Rennsteig, and bingo! Remember, Wedge type is for softer materials, Here's a pic...

Also, I used the Irwin Left Hand Cobalt drill bits...I know I didn't need to on this since the lag was in wood, but it didn't hurt. Those are damn good bits too.

EDIT: Are those bellhousing bolts Grade 5 or 8 or ??? B/C if they are 8, I'm not so sure wedge type will last. What brand spiral did you use? Did you use the long spiral flute, or the Snap On type? The SO type should work on those...But buy the Irwin Hanson ones---same thing, less $.
