ignoring everything that got me here . . .

it appears that some tool chests are built so that there are slide mounting locations all along the inside, rather than only at the locations where the drawers are.

have any of you reordered the drawers on your bottom or top chest, or even swapped drawers between (like moving three 2" drawers down and bringing two 3"drawers up) units?

are there brands that hold up to this better than others? errors to watch out for? while possible, it just never worked right again?

thanx.

Re: Home Depot Clearance Thread 2015

In for updates. I've been thinking about doing this on my Craftsman lower box. Even if it can be done, it might ought not to - after having this box since 1996, it will take me a while to adjust to a new layout. :)

so, while working through my thoughts on getting new boxes, i have done some research into box sizes. i looked at several hf, sears, and hd boxes. only one group, the sears edge line of boxes, appears to have drawers that are the same size in the top and bottom. most have deeper drawers in the bottom (the one home depot set i looked at had deeper drawers in the top, interestingly enough)

so, while swapping drawers around inside a box might work, largely it won't work between boxes inside a stack, even if they are "matching" boxes.

just so's you know . . .

the hf44's have the same size draws in the tops and bottoms. i wonder where the other drawers ended up? do they have chests with a lot of deep drawers, or did they buy the extra narrow drawers as "parts"?

My Mac Tools Economizer 2000 had the slide rails all the way uup the inside and I swapped a 3" drawer for the top 2 1-1/2" drawers. So I could have my sockets all up top.

I have a Craftsman 40" chest that I changed the drawers on. I started with this box

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-40-i...0901157000P?prdNo=19&blockNo=19&blockType=G19

Then I bought this box. It was cheaper to buy the new chest on sale, than it was to order just the parts I needed.

http://www.sears.com/26-in-5-drawer...p-00937718000P?prdNo=3&blockNo=3&blockType=G3

I moved the 2- 3" drawers from the 26" to the 40" and removed a 6".
I also ordered 3- 2" drawers from Waterloo and removed another 6" drawer.
So instead of 1- 4" & 4- 6" drawers I now have 1- 4", 3- 2", 2- 3" & 2- 6". This let me get the prefect drawer sizes for how I wanted it.

The great thing about the Craftsman box is, you can order replacement parts from www.searspartsdirect.com

Thanks SJR033! So if I was happy with the size of the drawers, but just wanted to change the order, I could do this without purchasing anything or doing large modifications? My Craftsman box is adequate, except the plier drawer is double stacked and the socket drawer is also overfilled.

not to be too nosey, but can you give me an idea as to how much those 3 drawers cost?

i'm trying to get a handle on how much additional i'll need to pay to "fix" something like you have . . . . .

The 2" drawer ran about $24/ea. That included the trim. The slides are the expensive part. That is why I bought the 26" cabinet to rob parts from.

I don't know which box you have. So maybe. When I pull a drawer out, the inside of the cabinet has notches/locations to move the slides to. You have to drill out a rivet. Move the side and rivet it back into place. My owners manual showed how to replace a slide. It is the same process.
