Got a small drill press Vice whose threaded Rod was seized up. Tried tactical applications of heat and oil soaking but in the end I twisted the handle off.
I’m off to get another length off all thread but what’s there best way to re use this handle? All I can come up with is cutting one nub off then trying to weld it back.DF42CBC3-4F45-4812-BA76-591B74B64F1A.jpeg

Yeah, cut ti, weld it, drill it and reinstall the handle. Drilling in a partial hole is not fun unless you have a mill. If you could roll up a small piece of copper and put it in the hole to keep it round, that will help. Or maybe your weld won't reach that far and the hole doesn't get filled or distorted.

That's a really poor design and it would be easier to make something better than to duplicate it.

Althread is OK for this, but its soft and not really that accurate so the fix using that wont be heirloom quality. Id rather see a large bolt used as a replacement if the original is pooched.

How far along is your lathe and have you ever cut threads before?

I would make an internally threaded collar to match the threaded rod, screw it on and face weld and turn to finish.

Then drill through for the handle. As to the ends on the handle, cut, drill for a slight press fit, then weld.

How was it attached to start with? Looks a little loosely goosey……

Whelp, I could not weld the handle bar, it’s just too small, my rods are too big and my skills too sucky.
Ended up using a 4” bolt and tack welded a nut on both ends.

But it’s all reassembled and works great. I had to shave a some threads off and was able to drill the end so the handle. Then taper the opposite end and form a channel for the set screw.D6F6023B-815C-495D-B43F-EF95013BD95B.jpeg4452EEF9-5E53-481B-8CBF-BE969FF3DA2E.jpeg06EAA533-48FB-4529-B9E5-0DE0CCE6A8CE.jpeg

Sounds like a project for when the lathe is operational😃

Me thinks you are talking about a vise, not a bad habit, although some do collect them...

As I get older I notice my spelling suffers.
It could be worse. Being pedantic over what others post on the internet is a sure sign of a small a poster having a Weiner.

Having said that, your spelling was fine, you just used the wrong form of the word.

And now that I have pointed that out my Weiner just shrank an inch.

Just wanted to show the new GJ members how someone solved their vise handle problem 10 years ago.

Shrank so fast I somehow quoted myself by accident.
When guys I work(ed) with start with the "mine is bigger than yours" behavior I remind them that if they were built like a "**** Star" they'd be a **** star not working in a Mould Shop! I'm pretty sure the same applies here, see this isn't the "**** Star Journal" and I'm not a **** star either :( LOL! Harry
