Both garage door openers need repairs (they run but don't engage the chain). The service call is not cheap, and parts and labour have me wondering if I should just have new ones installed.

Are there sites that give the life expenctancy of appliances to help determine whether to repair or replace? Thanks.

What brand are the openers? The Liftmaster openers (they also made them for Sears) have a predicatable failure of the plastic gear. It's a relatively easy fix and the parts are only about $30....worth fixing if you have the ability.

What brand are the openers? If chamberlain, craftsmen, or liftmaster they are the same. Chances are the main gear is stripped( plastic). All three of hose are maid by chamberlain and share the same parts. Google gear assembly. All you will need is a 1/2" wrench, 1/4" socket, 5/16 socket and a small 1/4" drive ratchet. Takes about an hour. Remove cover, unplug circuit board, loosen chain and remove from top sprocket. Remove 3 5/16" screws and remove assembly. Reverse to install. http://overheaddoorpartsonline.com/gear-assembly-liftmaster-chain-drive/
Be sure to use the grease on the main gear and worm gear
