I have a TS4N5 80-Gallon air compressor I bought from Tractor Supply Company 10-15 years ago.
I used to leave it on all the time, but many years ago when it was still under warranty, the flywheel broke while I was not in the shop and ever since then I've tried to do my best to turn it off before leaving the shop (my barn).
Unfortunately, some months ago I entered my barn and heard a weird noise, which turned out to be the compressor trying to start. I assume one of the capacitors failed and the motor was trying to start anyway. It could have been days that it was trying, but failing to start.
Right after this happened I watched some YouTube videos on the subject and I got the impression that the motor windings themselves (or something internal to the motor) could have been permanently damaged by the prolonged attempt to start.
While I don't have too much knowledge on this type of stuff, I do have a Supco capacitor tester from my days of having to do some preventative maintenance and emergency repair work on Rooftop Units (RTU's). Both the capacitors seem to be bad according to the Supco tester, but I'm thinking I should try to ensure there is no other damage to the motor before trying to find replacement capacitors.
Is there any reasonably simple way to test the motor without having replacement capacitors?
Where would I go to purchase replacement capacitors? Years ago, I would just walk into Grainger with the old capacitors and walk back out with replacements, but Grainger pulled out of my town years ago. While I can still order online from them, I wouldn't know how to narrow down exactly which capacitors to order.
The motor is from Emerson and its model number is IR #54421193. It is a 5.0 HP, 230-Volt motor running at 3450 RPM. It looks like I can order a completely new motor right from TSC, but it is $650 and I'd prefer not to have to spend that kind of money if this one can be repaired for a lot less.
