Replacement for large CFL in shop

So about 10 years ago when I did my shop I went with just a basic screw in socket fixture and giant 5000 lumin CFL. At the time a lot of guys on here were doing it
It was cheap and worked extremely well. Over the years I have lost a few and had spares. In the last 2 months I have lost 3 bulbs. I just went to order some and cant find anything like it any more. I'd rather not have to redo my whole shop. Anyone found a good LED replacement that wont cost a million dollars? Anyone know where I can get the giant CFL's with a regular base?

You can get 5000 lumen corn lamps practically anywhere. Try your local electrical supply house. Probably under $50.

I put in a lot of 105w cfls in years past. I remember them being much brighter than 5000lm? 7-8000 lumens come to mind.

These are what I have been using lately. They are a good replacement for the 85-105w cfls. Can usually get them for around $20 which is a great deal. I don't like the corn cob bulbs. To be honest they ****.

You can search for "LED COB lights" or "led ufo high bay light". No personal experience with either... did saw a shop with the cob lights.

I didn't replace a CFL, just a single incandescent bulb, using this 4 in 1 Light Socket Splitter E26 E27 Adapter Converter for Standard LED Bulbs. With four direction adjustable 1500 lumen LEDs in it, I have each directed towards a specific work area. I also have 8ft main LEDs for primary lighting, but this four-way fills in special areas nicely.

Around here, Home Depot sells the corn cob LEDs and they have regular bases. I just bought a 400-watt equivalent (7000-ish lumens?) for the security light above my driveway that's more than bright enough for the application. They go up to 1,000 watt equivalent (absolutely massive bulb, 20,000 lumens, might go blind by looking at it).

Tried out a few of these. I'd say ever so slightly less light but will certainly work. They are the 2 in the middle.

Are you comparing light on the floor? Or just looking up at the ceiling?

Agree..........you might be surprise when you actually measure the available light reaching the work surface..


use a light meter phone app and measure the ft candles or LUX at the work surfaces.
Hand held meter is another choice. It does not need to be $1k meter to do a simple side by side comparison.
