Replacement garage doors?

I need to replace my 2 garage doors. I can do the work myself I believe. I was curious where would be a good place to order them. I have the orange and blue box stores near me but if you guys have had better pricing and/or quality from an online vendor who would you recommend? Thanks for any input.

I just put up two amarr doors yesterday. They are okay for the money. Has torsions springs that you wind with prybars.

I have never had any complaints about the Wayne dalton and clopay stuff the big box stores sell. The last time I bought from them they were doing torsion springs with a worm gear which is absolutely my favorite. These companies make doors in a very wide range of prices.

Had a Clopay door installed 10 yrs ago by HD and was very happy w/ it. New house has a Dalton and it is the noisiest piece of **** I have ever heard and so is the Lanear opener. The hinges on the door are a weird style where they are 2 pieces of sheet metal bent on the edges into about 3/4 of a circle. One fits inside the other. White grease helped a little but I am thinking about wheel bearing grease as a next step.

I installed 2 Clopay doors from HD in our previous house many years ago; no problems with installation or afterwards.

I got the ones with the conventional long springs. They had a built-in winder that you ran with a drill, made it easy to fine-tune the adjustments.

I installed a couple of Clopay doors from Menards a couple of years ago. Two sided steel, r-18. Installation was straight forward. That building is in a very-high wind area... I bought and installed the "high wind" kit. Absolutely haven't had a single problem. Operation of doors is quiet and they work flawlessly. As soon as budget allows, I will replace the 3 doors on my current garage with the same.

I'm guessing you don't need 'em where you live, but the HVHZ-rated doors are likely the strongest residential doors you can get. I bought a pair of single-bay Clopay doors and have the Liftmaster bellcrank 8500 opener, which leaves your space between the rails open and unobstructed. I hung some 1" X 4" PT boards below my door tracks, and attached some of the FEIT LED 'twin-bulb' shop lights to the 1" X 4" boards, to provide plenty of illumination even-if the garage doors are open. Above the garage door tracks, I used 2X's to make a shelf for bulky but light things such-as Christmas decorations, on the garage gable-end. I used some Simpson Strong-Tie brackets fastened-together for hanging the 1" X 4" boards.

I put up a Menards door at my sisters house two years ago. It started making tons of noise when in operation. She had a garage door company come out for a tune up. They replaced the rollers on the door with a better design and now the door works smoother and quieter.

Bought 4 Clopay Doors at Big Orange about 20 years ago (so some of the features likely have changed a little). I bought the best insulated ones. These have held up very well. Nice thing is that Overhead Door also carries parts, so if I ever need something that Big Orange doesn't carry, I can probably still get them.

Installation was an easy DIY. As mentioned by others, the worm gear feature makes adjustment easy. The only caution is that the package when purchased is heavy. I had the doors loaded with a fork truck onto a trailer, and unpackaged while still on the trailer at home so I did not need to lift more than one panel at a time.

I am super happy with Haas. I found my local dealer, a little mom & pop shop. I took my measurements of the rough opening to them and they had the color chips. We spec'd it and they ordered it. Took approx 3-4 weeks as I recall to come to the shop, it was complete with track, springs, hangers and the seal kit of matching color.

The price difference was amazing with one other competitive door I priced with full turnkey service including installation and driving out to measure the opening, Approx $1400 savings (!) I could have bought two doors for the same money lol.

Big fan of Amarr- spec'd them for years on my builds.

I'd check warranty on "self-install" versus having them installed by dealer.

Recently replaced the inexpensive sectional doors on my garage.

We opted for the metal faced insulated doors, the doors are much quieter and the garage is cooler in the summer and the electric heater makes it warmer in the winter.

I wish I had spent the extra money several years earlier.

While you are deciding what to do it might be a good idea to just get a quote or two for a garage door company to just replace it.

The Overhead Door Company has locations all over the country, you can check their website to see if there's one close to you.

You can go to Google Maps, pull up your town and search for 'garage door suppliers', I'll bet there are multiple sources close by.

Get quotes from a few places. I just installed two doors and it was a rough experience. I went with Holmes gold series, r13, double steel with upgraded hardware. I have very limited clearances on sides and headroom so I built out my opening and added 3" of overhead, installed low headroom tracks, with rear mount torsion springs. If something could go wrong it did. Doors took almost 3x as long to come in as originally estimated and were damaged. The replacement panels were also damaged, but not as bad and were usable. The angle iron the lumber yard provided was not strong enough and flexed causing issues as soon as I wound the spring. In the end I figured it out, and am happy with my doors, but I will not be going to the lumbar yard near my work ever again. All in I ordered doors in August and finished the install beginning of the month. I'm still waiting for a partial refund and touch up paint from the lumbar yard.
I'm confident in my ability to replace the other doors I have. I have and I learned a lot, but if I were to do it all over I might have just paid one of the companies I had come give me a quote. The total cost would have been more, but it likely would have saved me a considerable headache. I will at a minimum, order through a different company next time

Thanks for all the responses. I haven't ordered anything yet. I'm getting quotes from a couple of local companies but I still might do them myself with doors from Lowe's. They have a Pella insulated door with windows on sale for $583 which seems like a decent deal. My tracks are in good shape so I think I could do it myself with some effort.
