Replacement hose for hose reel.

I have a speedaire hose reel that says it has 70 feet of 3/8" hose on it. The hose is cracking and I'd like to replace it in the near future. Is it possible to replace just the hose? I would assume so. If so, what is the best option for replacement hoses? Do I buy bulk hose from somewhere and then put my own ends on. Use it as an excuse to buy one of those fancy ferrule crimpers? Or just buy a premade hose with ends already on? I'm not even sure what the end that connects to the reel even looks like right now. Just trying to figure out my options.

Also, would there be any advantage to going with 1/2" hose on this for the bigger air tools like 498 air hammer? Or just stick with 3/8"? I like having a long hose to pull out in the driveway when working on trailers but more air flow for those hungry tools might be a good thing also. Running to hose reel is 1/2" black pipe and I do have another air outlet there so could just keep 3/8 on the reel and get a 1/2" hose to hook up to the extra outlet when needed. Pros and cons to both options I guess.

it could be either crimped on to the assembly or a simple NPT fitting or who knows? but the hose would certainly be replaceable .
if you go with 1/2" hose you'll obviously get less length
as far as bulk vs premade, at our Princess Auto stores, the bulk hose . plus fittings & clamps are at least the same or even more than premade equivalent
best would be have a good look at it & see what the connection is . posy some photos and even model number too

Usually the hose is just screwed to the reel at the end, or it loops out to the side of the reel and is screwed in. It is just NPT threads. 70 feet is an odd length. I just bought 250‘ of Flexilla hose. It seems to be very nice. Maybe buy a hundred footer on eBay and cut it down if needed. You can use hose clamps, just put them on the back end, buried in the reel.

I doubt it's crimped on, should be just a standard NPT fitting. I'm not sure what your reel looks like, if it's enclosed or not. I have a HF reel, surprisingly it's still going strong after 10 yrs now. The hose that it came with was garbage, started showing cracks in less than a year. I bought a replacememt hose from HF but that was when they used to sell Goodyear hoses, made in the USA, haven't needed to mess with it since.

Mine is not enclosed & you can see where the hose connects right on the side. If your's is enclosed just unreel it all the way, you should be able to see where the hose connects, again I doubt it's crimped on.

As for what size hose, that's up to you but I'm fine with 3/8" hose. I just bought a premade hose but just recently I got a fancy hose ferrule crimper so when needed I'll be buying bulk hose & will crimp my own.

Yup, your's is the same, connected right there.

BTW, air hose is usually measured by the ID.

Most Napa parts stores or hydraulic shop will crimp a new end on your hose.

I have a crimper and have used it a Few times since I bought it a couple months ago.

Just installed this 1/2in 50ft reel a couple days ago. Used an AC hose and that crimper for the supply to reel hose. Also cha get the 1/2in NPT fitting on one end to 3/8in using another crimper.

It is nice to have the tools and supplies on hand d to do what you need to without running round.
Also paid less for that reel than what a hose would cost. Kinda makes up for money spent on the tools to DIY

Yup, and I coincidentally have one too now, partly vwpieces to blame. I haven't used mine yet but I'm itching too. I needed a couple of hoses recrimped, was gonna buy a crimper but decided not to, got them done at my local hose/hydraulics shop.

Then I saw vwpieces happen to buy one shortly after for sloppy seconds & I got a bit jealous. Then another sloppy seconds popped up & I kept my eye on it. Then vwpieces happened to send me a PM about the same one. A few days later I couldn't resist & bought it. So lets just say @vwpieces is mostly to blame now (hey, I gotta blame somebody). :ROFLMAO:

Should we tell the OP bout the sloppy seconds thread? Air hoses and reels pop up frequently.
On phone atm... so no linky to the thread.
Reel above was $56 shipped. Lincoln SKF brand
Junk hose, skookum reel though.
Also scored 3/8in 50ft of Flexzilla hose for $16 shipped. Flexzilla stuff deals are pretty frequent. I think if they get dropped and dirty they are officially sloppy seconds.

🤫😀

But sure why not. This GJ, anyone here should already know about them, if not they doing it wrong! 😆

I hear good things about Flexzilla stuff but I'll never buy any of their stuff cause I hate the color. Well I don't mind the color so much, just not for hoses.

I recently found out about sloppy seconds. Just this last week I bought a new mightyvac hand pump tester and a cal-van inline brake flaring kit sloppy seconds. That can be addicting. Was going through my lists trying to find sloppy seconds and buying them even if I didn't really need them. There was another item on there that napa sells for over 900 bucks, amazon sells for 500 and there was a seconds for 325. I hesitated to think about it for a day and it was gone. Kicking myself for not pulling trigger right away. And not saying what it is just in case it does pop up again. LOL

Edit, I bought a 498 air hammer today so I decided to go check for sloppy seconds on bits for it. Found the grey pneumatics 7 piece set that is normally 68 marked down to 54 for the sloppy seconds. Not a huge savings but still something and I needed them anyway.
