Replacement Plate Casters - 3x3" mounting plate needed

Anyone have links to casters which are searchable by mounting plate size?

I need to replace the casters on some rolling work benches I built several years back. The wheels are failing, I assume I have overloaded them.

I made metal plates to match the casters, which apparently is an odd shape with the plates 3" x3" and the bolt holes appear to be at 2-1/8" centers. These were purchased I believe from Grizzly Tools.

Not having any luck finding a bolt on replacement caster.

Maybe I can just replace the wheels?

They don't seem to carry a 3"x3" caster plate mount.

I'd go with just replacing the wheels (as you've mentioned). Sure, you may have no choice but to buy the entire caster assembly, but you'll be back to rolling.

I moved one bench today. The ball bearings at the upper swivel appear shot as I had to use a floor jack as the caster would not swivel. I think I need to replace the whole unit.

Sorry yes I did see those. 500# rating with plastic wheels and no locks. The ones I have if I recall were rated 450# and are locking.

I would ignore the bolt pattern and just find the best caster I could afford and weld it to the plate.

The delema is if a welded caster fails, replacement is not as easy. I am dealing with that now on a heavy welding table someone else built.

Please God, don't ever weld a caster to a plate. Save the next guy (maybe you) and use bolts!

Thank you for this! I will expand my search. I could use the original bolt holes to plug weld to the adapter plate then bolt on the new caster.

Wow! Not quite 2 years ago I was on this thread! Damn kitchen/house renovation got in the way.

Any event, I took @tool_scrounge 's suggestion to heart and ordered weld on 4x4.5" caster plates from Caster Specialists and some Albion brand made in USA casters from them yesterday. No shipping eta yet.

The original 3x3 caster plates were clocked 45 degrees relative to the table leg as shown in the pictures at the first post.

Sketchup shows that the old plate (cyan) and new plate (green) will overlay nicely and just need to buzz off the edges of the old square plate! Will be able to tack weld the old to the new plates quite easily.

New casters are net 1/2" taller than the prior.

Need to get the old workbenches mobile again. This spring its garage cleanout, organization, and Race Deck installation! Race Deck supposed to arrive next week some time.

Received the casters a couple weeks back and just now opened the box.

The Albion units are quite nice! The weld on plates will work nicely. Each bench will have casters on all 4 corners and locking units on one long side of the bench (benches ~3x7').

Finally put new shoes on the two benches!

Man they roll like glass! Guess they oughta for +$500 clams.

Tacked the plates on vs plug welding thru the old bolt holes. I might be reworking these benches so wanted them easy to salvage.

In the background you can see the nasty failed gray concrete paint from prior owner and the pallet of RaceDeck tiles. The recent RaceDeck sale prompted the tile purchase and forced the caster upgrade.
