Picked up a "throw-away" oil less Craftsman Model 919152920 for $ zero dollars and the P.O. says it has a tank leak. Replacement tanks (Part #: TA-4272) are no longer available from Sears. Have not tested or even fired it up yet, but assuming the worse (bad tank) what are some suggestions or sources of tanks? I will not be repairing the tank if its bad, but I also dont want to throw alot of money at it.

Regards, Chet

You need to see if it's the tank wall that's leaking, or just the fittings. If it's the fittings you may be able to reseat them with teflon or plumber's putty to seal it.

I would get a storage tank of the same volume or larger...probably a little larger to upgrade the storage capacity. As long as the pressure rating of the tank and the safety relief-valve are at least as high as the rated compressor output it will safely work. You can make up your own brackets, hose, and fittings.

I have a small compressor that leaks a little air. It is used to pump up tires. I just let it leak a little air and I don't worry about having to drain water out of it because it is always drained after each use. My guess is it is the fitting and ditto to what the previous guy said about using some plumber's tape.

I would run it up to 10 or 15 lbs pressure & look for leaks. might be as others have said just a connection leak. if in fact the tank is bad, the low pressure wont cause as great a hazard as a fully charged tank could.
If in fact the tank is bad, look for any donor tank of similar size and be creative with yourfabricating skills.
I have a similar tank that could be talked into selling , but the shipping may be a problem.

Update on the leaking air tank. It's leaking around the extruded area where the drain valve is screwed into so I have no choice but to replace the tank. Sears is zero help as all the tanks they show are "Obsolete" A possible alternative is a tank from Campbell Hausfeld, but hopefully I can get a decent used one locally

There are places online that sell replacement compressor tanks, or you could take a chance on CL and hope it's not too rusty inside.

I realize the price was right, but those old Sears oil-less compressors are some of the worst, loudest, pos out there.

Dont spend to much time or money fixing it, there are much better compressors to start with.

Agreed..

Maybe look for a comp on cl with a smoked motor or air pump

I respectfully disagree. I put it in the basement and piped it to the garage to keep the noise down. I'm OK, but the wife and the cat are showing signs of hearing loss. I got 25 years out of it and the only repair was a couple of rubber tubing connectors. The motor shorted out last year and it wasn't worth fixing. I think I got my money's worth. Sold it for $50.
