Hello,

The tank of my (circa early/mid 2000's) Ingersoll Rand 24-Gallon Vertical (Belt Drive) Air Compressor Model: SS3R2-GM developed a pin hole. The motor/drive is still like new. I contacted Ingersoll Rand (Customer service was horrible, took me over a month and several emails to get an answer) and they told me there is no replacement tank available for that model any longer. I inquired about one of their current model slightly bigger or smaller tanks for a replacement. Have not heard back.

My question: Can I buy a tank from a different manufacturer and make it work or am I better off just going to a big box store and buy a new sub-$500 air compressor for the garage?

Any tank will work if you’re willing to do the modifications to the compressor or new tank to get everything installed. I think you’ll find that a new tank is nearly the cost of a new machine once you pay to ship it, paint it and install it.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'll just pick up a new compressor. I'll throw the motor up on marketplace and maybe get a few bucks for it.

Don't ask.
You should be able to make just about any tank work with some customization. Size doesn't need to be the same but you will probably want to be close. (Since your old was 24 gallon I'd say 20-30 Gallon is reasonable).
I'd pay attention to the location of the bungs. For me it is easier to fabricate/adjust mounting the motor and compressor rather than configure the plumbing.
Replacement tanks are surprisingly expensive, compared to the price of a new compressor.
