So here's the deal, awhile back, before I started on my new garage, the DOT was tearing down a house for the new road that was going to be routed by the our house. I was able to salvage the nearly new replacement windows out of the house. they were fairly easy to pop out. I think I pulled out about 26 windows in 3 hours. My intent was to use them in the garage.

However, after doing some more thinking, I'm wondering if that is a bad idea. Since they are replacement windows, there is no nailing strip or flashing. I had thought about ways of flashing it or building a moch frame around the window to flash it properly......

thoughts on flashing a replacement window in new construction? is there a way to buy nailing strips to go on the perimeter???

Should I try and sell the windows and buy new windows? I only have my time and labor invested in obtaining the windows.....

All you need to do is build jambs for the replacement windows. While it may be a PITA it is not going to be too expensive and once you set up to build one of them the rest go fast. Provide the jamb with a blind stop to run the window up against and a pitched sill at the bottom. Put a casing around the exterior of the jamb and apply a flashing on the top casing when you install the jamb. A decent window like an Andersen is over 200 bucks for a typical size. You can probably build a jamb with an exterior casing for about 50 bucks in PVC or TuffBoard.

I bought used windows and doors first and designed my walls to fit. Built the openings much like tciani suggests and I had never done it before. Best advice I got was "think like water" I built them myself so I knew how to fix it when one leaked. Thanx Trevor

good ideas guys! tcianci--would a guy use regular wood or pressure treated wood? would the casing just be painted or is there an aluminum trim wrap that would go around them?

I had been thinking in this direction, but I know that the ****** is in the details....
