Replacements for Kennedy machinist drawer pulls?

I have a Kennedy 520 machinist’s chest that I’m stripping of rust and repainting. I’d like to get replacement drawer pulls—the little plastic ones, mine have what appear to be split rivets embedded in them that hold them to the drawers.

I’ve looked online and can’t find anyone that sells them? Even Kennedy’s accessories catalog at kennedymfg.com didn’t appear to have them listed. If they’re not too pricey I’d like to get a set, but I’m open to alternatives if anyone has done that before, or knows of acceptable replacements. Thanks everyone.

If its an older box I could not find anything either. I called Kennedy and they said they were not available anymore.

They're still making the drawer pulls I have on the current boxes. Here's a picture of what I'm after:

If you contact them point Kennedy to this thread, there is some pent up demand for parts like that for those of us who like restoring older boxes. I could use a few myself, along with the pins that hold them (should be sold in sets...)! ( I made one from hardwood for the door panel and while it works, it's not that nice of a fix...)

I'll give Kennedy a ring and let everyone know what they say. Strange that there aren't more of these floating around, either on eBay or 3rd party sites.

Did anything every come of this? My Kennedy box is missing a little handle, a couple had been altered by the OP in order to keep them working (he drilled and screwed through one of the pin holes) and one more I probably ruined by bending the split too much. I'd be grateful to know of any replacements that could be had.

Possible solution: 3-d printing. Substitute a screw hole or an embedded nut for the splits, and these are small enough for a 3-d print job. Plastic color could be matched or simply painted. (no I don't have a 3-d printer, but am looking for a good excuse...)

They're available from Kennedy. I ordered these earlier this year.

Sorry but I don't remember the price. I called up their parts department. They had the drawer retaining clips for the drawer slides too.

I don't need another project but....they could be printed at Shapeways in White Nylon and dyed using RIT dye. Or in stainless.

Looks like it's $18 for a set of four ????
And that would explain why I only have four.

That's cheap compared to the ones I make.
Ok very cool. Your OCD trumps mine...all day...and twice on Sunday

Those look a lot like mine but not enough. The center hole in the back with the extruding diamond around it is not like mine at all. In its place I have simply a metal stud that is split in half. When you insert it into the hole in the drawer, you bend the two halves apart, securing the pull to the drawer. Unless I do some drilling, these parts won't work on my box.

Also, these nice ones made by Hafen would work for me but they are different from the ones I pulled off.

Where he has positioned his holes, I have little studs. I suppose, though, that he used screws through the stud holes to affix the pulls, ignoring the center hole in the drawer. Quite doable. I was thinking about making them with the studs and a center hole, but his look easier.

There is a thread here where a member made knobs for his Kennedy.

Not sure of the style knobs.

I recall being highly impressed with the job he did.

Wanted to share some new information I picked up today after talking with Kennedy Manufacturing about the old rectangular drawer pulls on their classic machinist boxes.

I called them with two goals in mind
  1. to see whether the variations in those pulls could help us better date vintage boxes, and
  2. to figure out whether someone could create one or two solid 3D-printable replacement designs to release into the public domain.
I ended up speaking at length with Cathy (sp?), an incredibly friendly and knowledgeable rep. She went above and beyond walking through what she’s seen over the years.

First, the bad news: Kennedy is no longer producing the classic hand-carry “Signature” series (520, 560, 526, etc.), and there’s no current plan to bring them back. The old machinery and tooling were simply worn out.

Now for the drawer-pull info.

Cathy confirmed that undocumented variation absolutely exists in the older rectangular pulls (the style before the twist-and-snap all-plastic version). Kennedy has no surviving documentation on these changes, so any real detail will have to come from collectors. She believes most of the differences were due to wartime material scarcity, not intentional redesigns. She’s seen all the types below but can’t tie any of them to specific date ranges.

Variations she described or confirmed include:

All-metal pulls

Plastic pulls
:
  • smooth face
  • textured face with a raised, elongated horizontal diamond
  • attached with two embedded metal split rivets
  • attached with one embedded metal split rivet + two plastic alignment pins (one on each side)
  • attached with screws
She’s also seen cases where the drop-front panel pull differs from the drawer pulls on the same box.

Replacement idea:

For anyone trying to replace missing pulls, a 3D-printed plastic version attached with two short screws (no deeper than the pull itself) seems like the most universal option. When I next have a need I’m planning to start by commissioning a model of the most common color, fascia style, and other visible details.

Finally:
If anyone here has documented examples, dated boxes, or photos of the various pull types (and drawer hole specs for a 2 point attachment), I’d love to compare notes and build a more complete picture.

I'm pretty sure this has already been done.
@Outlawmws , Thanks for responding to this old thread that I resurrected. It seemed to be the best place.

I’ve certainly seen multiple examples of 3D printing the current style (along with suggestions for drawer face modifications to support them) (YouTube, Etsy, EBay, etc,)

But if you know of any quality reproductions that don’t require drawer mods (squaring up the center hole) on older boxes, please do share.

You may be referring to GJ member, @Hafen_Kafer but he hasn’t replied to DM, hasn’t been heard from in a while and I can’t see his images.

Not sure if this will help or not, but I personally prefer the look of the new aluminum pulls on the 3611. I wonder if they are available and interchangeable with the brown plastic ones? I didn't see them on the Kennedy website. Found the brown pulls tho.

By the way, I’ve 3D printed a single brown plastic puller today as a POC…I watched the YouTube video and downloaded the free STL file from FPF - Functional Print Friday. (the source RTM mentioned above.)

I chose to simplify and print the back completely flat — and made the pull solid. (Will drill pilot holes and use two tiny screws to attach.)

Took me all of 30 minutes and $0.25 at my local public library (which has a Maker Lab).

Don’t laugh. This is my first time to touch a 3D printer and load filament.

p.s., What I had hoped to do is to have the 2 holes in the back even pre-drilled — as needed to mate with the existing hole alignment on the older, vintage boxes and front panels. And have a variation for a flat face or diamond face. (These edits would be quick if library staff does them for me. In the meantime, I’m off to play with TinkerCAD.com and Bambu Studio.)
