Replacing flooring.

I have to replace more of the vinyl floor tiles in my building. They are the 12"x12" commercial vinyl tiles. The subfloor is plywood. Can I just sand off the old adhesive, put down new adhesive and install the tiles or should I try to scrape the old glue off? I don't want to gouge the plywood and have more problems.

I asked the guys at Lowes and had no faith in their answer which was "Yea that should work.". Translation "We have no idea".

best bet is to tear up the tiles and subfloor. or tear up just the tiles and put a new subfloor over the old one. the old adhesive will probably be a little sticky still pending on how old the tiles are and will not really be sandable.

The old tiles are close to 20 years old. The ones that have already gotten brittle and come up don't have any tacky feel on them or on the underlayment.

ok. good. after the old tiles are removed, i now will recommend that you use a new 1/4 plywood subfloor. this will give you the best results. or even better hire a pro
