I bought a Price Pfister replacement hot water stem, pulled the old one out and cannot, for the life of me, get the new one to work. I've tried every position and it just runs in any position. What the heck am I missing?! I've done this before!

Are you sure there's no debri stuck in the seat? I have to assume you took it back out to confirm the sealing washer didn't come off when you where turning it.

Well then either the seat is shot or the stem is bent.

Have you checked the supply hoses?
Many times there is a plastic plug on the end of them.
My Moen kitchen faucet came with them, and were not readily noticeable.

Are you sure it's the right stem for the faucet? Sometimes there are variants within a brand for different models...

Let me guess, the faucet is from Home Depot? None of their "brand name" fixtures are really the same as the rest of that brand's line. They're made to Home Depot's spec and many times the "real" replacement parts don't work.

This is simply not true. Yes, some of the faucets are big box part numbers, but not all of them are. If I buy the same model number from a plumbing supply house and from Home Depot why wouldn't they be the same? What manufacturer is going to risk lawsuits and their reputation by putting the same model number on two different items? Now, they could have different model numbers like putting an extra letter on the the end of the model number to signify cheaper innards.

I wanted a particular faucet from Moen. It turned out the plumber couldn't get it as it is a retail only model that Moen doesn't sell to supply houses. The contractor bought the faucet from Menards and had the plumber install it. It still takes the same cartridge and I believe it has the same Moen warranty. Maybe it won't last as long as a plumbing supply model, but I won't know for quite a few years I hope.
